hi guys so in my search for a yote rifle i was looking at the .22 mag

theres one thing i dont like about the .22 mag most of the ammo fragments way too much leaving a mess and having little weight to go through the target

anyone know of a ammo that dose not do this i have not seen test on the hornady stuff and thay have a new critical defense .22 mag with a 45gr FTX bullet that looks good. even out of a naa mini it expands and go's to about 10" and thats at 1000fps out of a 1 7/8" barrel out of a 24" barrel it gets 1700fps but this means nothing to me without the bullet staying intact

my cooey does better with cci Velocitor ,mini mag ,and remington golden bullet(the real ones not the bulk pack) i get way better expasion and without fragmenting much but im looking for something with a little more punch

something in .223 rem would be nice but most of the guns are a littleout of my price range right now as i had to get some siding put up and a few other things done to my house :bangHead:

The cheap .22 WMR Super-X rounds will have no problem 1 shot dropping a coyote at 100yards.

Have you considered the .22WRF ammunition that Winchester has made in the last several years? 45gr flat tipped lead bullet at 1450fps. Not as violent as the rapid expanding .22Mag. bullets, but with good penetration.

If you want penetration and not fragmentation there are several makers of FMJ ammo, but I don't think that style of bullet kills very well. You could try the Federal 50 gr. JHP. It goes a little slower and will penetrate better than the light bullets.
FWIW, I have had good success on several beavers with regular Winchester 45gr. HP's.

All FMJ is not created equal. Winchester 40 gr FMJ is like a mini hardball round complete with an actual jacket and core and subsequently holds together and penetrates VERY well with very little or no deformation.

CCI FMJ is mostly plated and does tend to deform, much like a soft point but does tend to hold together quite well with virtually no fragmentation.

Federal FMJ is similar to CCI.

RWS FMJ is similar in construction to Winchester but with higher velocity. Awesome stuff if you can find it - I've used it to put cattle and hogs down and I've never found one even bent, riveted or dimpled.

40 grain jhp in winchester or CCI are great for yotes and dont fragment
mushroom nicely....

the weight retention on the bullet says differnent

the win 40gr expanded to .311 went 13.5" and recovered weight was 29.1gr with a 16" barrel in calibrated gel (not my test its on brassfetcher.com)

the cci Velocitor (tested by the same guy) Penetrated to 13.3" with expanded diameter of 0.335" out of a 18.5" barrel

why use expesive ammo to put down pigs and cattle a .22 lr bulk pack bullet does the same

this is a 22 mag thread not 22 LR

I know a 30gr vmax drops an angry 120lb shepard cross in its tracks. It also knocks down 35lb coyotes out to a 95 yards easy. It does a lot of internal damage. 40 grain solid will work but why chance a pass thru and a lost yote? I have yet to shoot a coyote with a body thicker then 13"
