I want to buy my uncle some .22 mag ammo, he uses Winchester only but I would like to broaden his horizon. He uses this stuff mainly to knock down beavers and other small critters. Any recommendations?
Thanks,

the federal 30 TNT is just that. it mangles animals. i found them to group about 2" at 50yrds. i likes the federal 50g fmj but then had alot of drop. i shoot the 30vmax hornady and they are great.

i use Federal 50-gr HP You Name it She will Kill it!

Also Works Real Nice if you Want to shoot Them BIG beavers!

I today just priced out some Hornady V-Max 30g. 13.99 at Canadian Tire, and 14.99 at a gun store. Crappy didn't have them in stock though. So I'll be picking them up at the gun store and trying them out. I have read they are really accurate in a lot of rifles.

I would stay with the winchesters( 40g hp) as I have had the best results with them on beaver. A 40 g solid might be the best for beavers.

Winchester silver box(super-x) will not fire in my model 93 (2 or 3 at least ftf per 5 round clip). CCI maximag hp and hornady vmax both do very well. Winchester rounds seem to group all over the paper (I am not a good shot but the others stay in groups at least!).

Hornady 30gr. V-Max is the most accurate stuff I've used, about $14-$15 a box. Remington Accu-tip is pretty good too...bought some to try, but reluctantly. It was almost $18 a box. I'll never buy it again. I also think that if ammo manufacturers (or distributors) want to keep people buying magnum rimfire ammo instead of moving up to centerfire...they might want to consider putting a price cap on this stuff. It's getting a little out of hand.

I also like the Winchester 34g JHP. $11.99 a box. I would use what shoots best. I've tried the Rem 33g accu-tip. They didn't group well for me.

I tried the 33gr Rem as well in 2 different rifles and neither grouped worth a darn. 40 Maxi mag works well in my Zastava and the Vmax Hornady 30gr load works well in my CZ 512. FS

CCI 40g JHP is the only one that shoots very well in mine. There is also a 30g TNT load that would probably be very good for pest control.

I have found the 30 gr TNT load to be more effective on smaller animals - I shot a couple of large racoons and they both ran off and died (found them the next day) but they did make it a fair distance. Beaver are larger and if you catch a bit of water before impact you may be less than satisfied with the results.

I have found W-W 40 gr FMJ to be great for penetration and either the W-W 40 gr JHP or the CCI 40 gr FMJ if you want some upset/expansion.

It is pretty easy to throw out ideas regarding what shoots well in your rifle on paper but when throwing bullets at game we have a responsibility to ensure that are humane in our harvest...

YMMV

My Marlin groups the Winchester 34g JHP the best @ 100yrds followed by the V-Max. The Remington Acutips.... You could stand 100yrds out, I would aim at your chest, fire.... And every shot would hit everything BUT you!! They sucked. CCI 40g FMJ did 3rd best in my gun.

Guess I already posted! Lmao!!

I tried winchester, remington and hornady. My savage 93F like the cheap 40g jacketed hollow points winchesters the best (for group size 1.5"), the 40g remington (group 1.5" to 2") would be next then the hornady 30g vmax next (these group at about 4" at 100 yards)
