.22 mag

my grandmother on a farm gets squirals at 200 yards no problem.. now she just use the .22 for pest controll but if you want a bit more power behind the bullet use a bolt action gun the semi auto loses some of the gas presure moveing the bolt back so it cause the bullet to have less power down range.. but it really depens on the gun and ammo..

Yes, and no. The .22 mag is effective for targets, and actually has a much flatter trajectory than the .17 hmr at 200 yards if I remember my ballistics tables correctly, but you'll need to work out your elevation and be on for distance at 200.

In fact, if you are just shooting targets, and want to use a rimfire, I'd stick with the .22lr. I use it on the 200 yard line for fun, though my groups are nothing to brag about. You'll need a centerfire for tight groups at that range.

Of course, I'm shooting my .22lr from between two high berms in northern ontario, so I have little wind issues, if you have variable wind, like a farmers field, you'll need some serious luck to hit smaller targets with any regularity.

.22 magnum at 200 yards ?

I have a Winchester 9422 M , I have used it for shooting at balloons at 200 yards , if memory serves me correctly the hold over is about 8 inches . ( that's with the rifle sighted in at 1 & 1/2 inches high at 100 yards . I 've taken many groundhogs with my Winchester ( one shot kills ) but at 125 -135 yard maximum range , I think for any type of hunting this is the farthest distance you should be using it at . Had a .22 hornet years ago and it's range was about 175 yards max., .22 magnum is effective and accurate round , but it does have it's limits .....hope this helps .....Joe

I was shooting the 22lr at 150 yards at paper it made holes, but there was no power to one shot one kill. The ammo was CCI Velocitor at 1435fps. Now moved on to 22magnum, like JOE.L said for hunting I would stay under 125 yards

I keep rimfire targets (.22wmr) at under a hundred yards. Partially because my aim sucks a bit still :)redface:), but mostly because I've noticed a rather disturbing pattern on the JHP variety not quite opening up like I want them to...

Thats why I have a real accurate 22lr (CZ452) and a 223. The 223 is just a 22 centre fire anyways but it goes out a lot farther and with a lot more thump. Both fun to shoot but I can reload the 223.
