.22 magnum case splitting

Hi,

I recently bought a used Winchester 9422M.
This 9422M came with 250 (old) mixed rounds. Concord, Federal and Winchester
cartridges in JHP and FMJ.

After cleaning and oiling it like it desesperatly needed, I must have shot 50 of those
older round without problems.

Today, I shot 5 or 6 rounds and of these, 2 casings failed to eject. The cases had expended
and the cases were cracked. These were older Winchester Super X cartidges...

What happened ? Too old cartidges, case corrosion, too powerful loads or is it my 9422M
that's having a problem.

I have shot a couple other Super X from the same lot without problem... ????

I had a batch of winchester .22 wmr with cracked case necks. There were maybe a dozen or so out of a box of 50 with cracked necks, this was loaded ammo, not fired. Poor quality control at the winchester plant. I complained to the distributor ( graywoods I believe.) and got a credit to buy more ammo.

Did you check out any of the original 50 brass for deformation?

I would try a box of fresh ammo (My .22wmr likes Federal) before blaming the gun. Winchester ammo isn't my fav. and I would start finger pointing at the ammo before the rifle. Check the fresh, ejected brass for deformations.

My first thought was ammo as well after you stated that the rifle needed cleaning desperately. Depending on how the ammo was stored, the brass and powder/primer components could have degraded enough to cause the issues you are having.
