I've been thinking of getting a .22 at some point. A friend has a Marlin (model 70 something I think). It's a semi-auto with detachable mag. I enjoyed shooting it. Seems like a real tack driver, as far as .22s go.

I'm looking to spend anywhere from $200-400, but I'd like something decently accurate, semi-auto, with synthetic stock. My friend's Marlin is pretty much what I'm looking for, but I'd appreciate some other suggestions if you have any.

What sorts of things should be considered?

Btw, I've already got a pretty powerful scope to go on the rifle, so cost-wise I'm just looking to focus on the rifle itself, and the scope mount.

My recommendation for low cost with good out of the box accuracy in a semi would be a Marlin 795 if you like box mags, or a 60 for a tube mag. If you want a little extra bling go with a SS model like the 60SS (bottom pic). Excellent gun for the money.

There is a CZ auto loader in the EE right now.
These are a good gun for the money as are the Ruger 10-22 in my opinion.
It is your money and your taste in the end and go with what fits your budget.

I'm really liking the sounds of the Marlin 795, particuarly the SS model. I'm thinking of going with the box mag as my daughter and nephew may be interested in taking up shooting, and I think the detachable mag might be a little safer in terms of being able to check for empty a little easier. The tube mags are nice, but I've heard of people having issues with a round being left in the mag even though they've cycled a few times with nothing coming out. I know ideally the follower should be inspected, and there's really no excuse for leaving a round in a tube mag, but its happened to someone I know, and I'd just like to avoid tube mags on a rifle a less experienced person might be using occasionally, even though I'd be supervising.

+1 for the Marlin 795. It's my favorite .22semi, had a 10/22 and got rid of it. The 795 is WAY more accurate, lighter (great for carry) last shot bolt hold-open, proper action release, cheap mags~the list goes one. (Actually, that's about it. :) )

Bought mine new (regular, not the stainless) for $125 all-in at SAIL's no-tax event. Should have bought 2. I like the light, synthetic stock but if you have a hang-up and want a wood one, Boyd's makes them for the 795.
