On some bolt action .22 rifles it states that .22 shorts, longs and long rifle can be fired, however on other .22 rifles in bolt action it only states for .22 long rifle.

Is there anything different to a .22 rimfire rifle when it can shoot all three and a bolt action rifle that just states for long rifle?

Can I fire .22 longs in a .22 bolt action that only states .22 long rifle and is there a diffeence in accuarcy?

Thanks

Longs will probably work in any non-semi since it's the same brass as a LR with a lighter bullet. Other than the CCI CB longs, I don't think you can buy long ammo anymore.
Some of the older guns had mags made for shorts. You can shoot short ammo in any bolt action, the trick would be if it feeds from the mag.
Probably more in the mag design than anything.

It's a feeding issue. Most tubular magazine bolt rifles will digest the shorts to LR, Mossbergs were designed to use the different lengths of ammo, even the detachable mag feed guns.

I have Marlin with tubular mag that feeds LR and shorts equally well. Guess, the only real difference it makes, is the speed of the bullet, entering rifling. I was not impressed with performance of the shorts - same accuracy for the same amount of noise, just different bucks.

I don't think you will find longs very easily any more. You can fire all of them out of a gun chambered for Long Rifle, but semi-autos won't likely cycle with the lower power rounds. Shorts are handy for shooting varmints out of your bird feeder without upsetting the neighbors.

I find the 'shorts' to be quite a bit quieter, not sure if they're officially 'subsonic' but I've used them effectively for small game (they all work in the tube magazines of my cooey/winchester bolt action). In fact, I think the shorts shoot more accurately for me at short ranges (or at least, I found I couldn't adjust the rear sight low enough on my .22 with 'full-power' LR loads, but it works fine with the shorts...).

I have used them all but thought the short and long created more leading problems. I got 3 shorts for every sparrow or starling we shot as kids but it usually took more that three shorts per bird claimed. Once we switched to long rifles I could pay my own way. Even the International Dual competition has switched to long rifle ammo.
