Hello,
I am new to firearms, I am expecting my pal shortly. I am looking for recommendation for a semi auto .22 rifle. My understanding is the ruger 10/22 is best, but is limited to 10 round magazine capacity. I am looking for something comparable in reliability, but also allows a 25 round mag. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Stay away from the 10-22 you will spend the same amount 'improving' it and in the end it's still a 10-22. My recommendation would be a Marlin Model 60 you could probably squeeze 12-13 into the tubular magazine. It's gives you semi-auto fun at a much lower cost.

If you want accuracy nothing beats a bolt gun - my choice would be the Savage Mark II with iron sights a good place to learn

Henry lever Golden boy.Fits 16 to 23 rounds and is very accurate. It is the semi auto of the old west and a very attractive and well made rifle for under 1000

Rem 597 heavy barrel or marlin 795 have 30 round aftermarket mags or look at GSG offerings if you want a modern non traditional look.

There is nothing wrong with a 10-22 . and I have shot many of them and they can be very very accurate . I don't know why the post above stated that you have to improve them . I shot many groundhogs years ago with a couple of different ones . and I have read that the Marlin 22 model 60 doesn't hold up as well as the Ruger 10-22 shooting high velocity 22 ammo and you need to install a buffer in behind the bolt to keep it from damaging it's self . not that the model 60 isn't a nice 22 rifle . and a 25 round mag ? I don't know if you an buy those anymore . the best one on the market for the 10-22 is the BX 22 made by Ruger but it's restricted up here .

about two weeks ago my buddy in Texas bought a 10-22 and it was the take down model . he loved it so much he just went out and bought another 10-22 . it isn't a take down model . and he loves it also . so you can take if from here .

There’s not many choices that have 25 round mags and are better than a 10/22. A 795 with a few upgrades would be arguably better than a base 10/22 and not cost much more.

If you’re just looking for best, and don’t mind being limited to 10, the buckmark rifle is what you’re looking for.

I have had 2 buckmark rifles, both of which developed a slidestop issue. Don't use the slidestop to drop the slide. Even when firing off a mag, inserting new mag, trying to sling shot the slide sometimes doesn't work. You would have to pull the slide back at the same time dropping the slide stop with the other hand. Beware, frame damage can occur. I still own one of them though.

I have a 10/22 stock and it works great. It is true that it comes with a 10-round box magazine. But there are after-market options. It paired well with the Butler Creek steel lips 25-mag .22LR magazine (I am not sure if they make this anymore). Been a great rifle.

From what I understand, at the moment exclusively rimfire-rifle only magazines (that cannot be put into a pistol) are not limited to 10 rounds. Unfortunately the task at hand is to ensure that any 10+ round magazine for a semi auto rimfire rifle DOES NOT fit into a pistol. If it does, it is must abide by the 10 round limit to ensure legality of use.

Don't go bad mouthing the 10/22 , I have 58 . Many are collectibles , some are builds for 100 yd target shooting . My go to is a second year (1965) production Ser. 4738 bought new in B.C. still running like a Swiss watch !

Rem 597 heavy barrel or marlin 795 have 30 round aftermarket mags or look at GSG offerings if you want a modern non traditional look.

I just bought a 25mag for the 795 and find im shooting it way more then the few 1022 i have, did multiple ammo tests and find for a semi auto it is bang for the buck.

Check out the Savage A22 rifle. Hunting gear guy did a video review and it's an interesting .22lr semi auto rifle with 25 round magazines.

If you want a 10/22 rifle, you can run a spectre ballistics magazine adapter that lets you use Rem 597 rimfire rifle magazines.

Or you could buy a TUF-22 or modify a 10/22 to accept TUF-22 25 round magazines.

maybe its because I only did single shot for months, but a 5 round mag is all I really need. Thats on grouping test and then reset and reload. 10 sounds like supersizing your XL coke.

Not a semi-auto but I have a Henry H001 and it's a very fun gun to shoot, the rifle holds up to 15 .22 lr, 17 .22 long and 21 .22 short. It's very fun to shoot .22 short. I also have a Ruger 10-22 another fun gun.
