Not posting too much these days, so sort of 2 posts in one.. :)

Well, found myself running some errands today that put me close to my LGS...and Bass Pro. I had wondered if my LGS had one of the new GSG16s there and sure enough, they got their first delivery yesterday. (I think I overheard that said) Sitting in the rack was a CZ 457 MTR 16" as well, so naturally...I had to fondle that too. The MTR looks beautiful/feels beautiful...which is tough for this 452 fan to admit, but I'll be a man about it. lol I actually don't think I'd ever opt for this stock style for anything BUT a bench gun, and with a 16" barrel..it seems a bit better-suited to field shooting, but all of that is based on about 2 minutes holding it. lol Regardless, beautiful-looking thing...and it's hard to handle one, and NOT want it!

The GSG16~I'm not a semi guy, or a black gun fan really...but having always liked the look of MP5s (and having shot a full-auto one in Vegas :) ) I was keen to handle one. In the wake of today's experience, I don't imagine I'll ever own one, but it would be a blast to try one of these things! The mag seemed allot nicer/more robust than I thought it would be. Seems to seat itself positively too/nice mag release. The iron sights are basically useless (too low) and the more I tried to get my eye low enough..the more my cheek jammed into something sharp-feeling on the stock. Could never get my eye low enough, but I suppose most people will mount optics. From the outside, it's hard to see any evidence of any material OTHER than plastic, and while I think allot of people could get past that, the grip is probably the most disappointing/toy-like. Anyhow, fun guns I'm sure!

Another gun I held, and was surprised I liked as much as I did=the Scorpio EM332A. lol I mean, a few things NOT to like about this gun, especially the length of the bolt vs. the thickish wall of the stock. When closed, the bolt almost disappears. lol I mean...just the ball-end of it proud of the stock's surface. It should probably be 3/4"+ longer than it is. Balance isn't great, but ergonomics feel pretty good. Iron sights seem OK too, and straight. lol I did a search in this forum for "Scorpio" and found a thread about these being on sale this past May for $159 @ Tenda. In hindsight, I should have maybe grabbed one. I imagined it would be as rough as the 3 Norinco JWs I've had over the years (2 backpackers and one of the K98 clones) but everything about this Scorpio seems to be better. Fit/finish. I'll give this one some thought too. Might be a fun gun for knocking around..and think I have at least one cheap-o scope I could throw on it.

Over to Bass Pro..

They had the Tikka T1X in their clearance rack (though probably more $ than most CGN sponsors)...a 22 and a 17HMR. I played with the 22 a bit. Having recently purchased a new T3X varmint in 204Ruger, I was expecting the same bolt slickness...or similar. Not the case. I would actually like to own one of these guns somewhere down the road, but I did think the finish on the barrel looked a bit cheap/shiny. Again, wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, but in a world where you can still find CZ 452s around $550-$600....a new rifle costing even more than that should be finished as nicely. Sort of my personal "bench mark", that CZ 452 thing. :) I'll be doing more reading-up on these guns....which I've mostly been ignoring since they came out. I'd love to try one.

Next-up~the T/CR22...a gun nobody seems to talk about. Again, I'm a bolt gun guy...and not particularly fond of 10/22s, but I'm drawn to this gun for some reason. lol The mags are supposed to be a pain in the a** to load, but they have a good reputation for accuracy...in spite of the light/flimsy stock. Another tempting gun, and I know I've mentioned this model before.

At the end of the day, the only gun that might actually be "on the list" in the foreseeable future~the Scorpio oddly enough.

Onto the shooting~with a few nice, sunny fall days in the last 2 weeks...I've had both my 16" 452 American and Anschutz 64 TT out a few times. Punching some paper, but also dismantling some pumpkins on the farm I visit. The odd soft one, or small one the turkey's have been nibbling get tossed aside...but they make fun reactive targets for the visiting rimfire guy. lol Use high velocity hollow points~chunks literally fly 10' in the air. lol Anyhow, .22LRGUY junior decided he wanted to tag along, my 15 year old son. :) He mostly wanted to blast away at the pumpkins with the CZ running CCI Blazer HPs...but knowing the 64 came along, he asked to give that a go. Some SK Rifle Match got donated to that silly cause... but even he wanted to see what i.e. could do with it accuracy-wise, so I put some 1", self adhesive target dots on my target stand. The group below was the best of 3 (@ a ranged, 50 yards) but all were good. To put that in perspective, he's only used that rifle once before, and it was over a year ago. He maybe shoots 22 a few times a year, and maybe 100-200 rounds, max each time. Pretty good! :) I'd say he's a "chip off the old block", but I couldn't shoot rifles worth a damn at his age. lol

Proud dad day...but I still think the pumpkins were more memorable for him. A day in the sun with one of my kids and a couple of nice rifles~can't ask for much more than that.
