Hello all i have been playing with larger rifles for some time now and would like to get into some .22's now. I have just bought a Remington 579 Stainless and is going to get a Leupold 2-7X33 VX-II scope. I load my own ammo for my bigger rifles but now i would like to know what's the best/most reliable ammo in .22. I have just picked up a some CCI Stinger ammo. Nickel plated cases and leavening the pipe at 1640 FPS. Is this one of the better makes of .22 ammo? . My plan is going to be this I want to pick up 3 rimfires the one i have now. Then one for longer range target shooting maybe 100-150 yards and a .17 HMR. But for now i would like to build up this one it came with a scope, the scope is garbage. And its getting the Leupold. So any info on these rifles or suggestions on what to do to build it up would be great.

CCI stingers are not exactly renowned for their accuracy (I have trouble getting them to group any better than about 3/4" at 25 yards with any gun except for my CZ). There are many different types of ammunition available for these guns - anywhere from $17 a carton (I think these are 525 round packs) to $16 a box (50 rounds) Eley Tenex ultimate EPS. Big difference in these two rounds, but for many people not nearly enough to justify the price. For starters just try as many different types of rounds as you can to see which one shoots the best. Rimfires are quite picky about ammunition, and two idenical make/model guns can shoot different ammo the best. Try some from CCI, Federal, Winchester (their dynapoint/powerpoint/hollowpoint ammunition is preatty good but I would tend to stay away from the Xpert rounds), and if you want to try a target round give some of the cheaper Eley a try. These cost about $4-$5 a box.

Try CCI velocitors if you want something that packs a big punch and is reasonably accurate. They are similar to stingers in that they're a hyper velocity round, but they use a heavier bullet and maintain more kinetic energy than the stingers beyond 100 yards.

Velocitors also have a bigger hollow point and in theory they should expand more.

and be aware that the stinger is just a little longer than regular 22LR so sometimes there is a build up from discharging them that can screw up the regular 22s
try winchester power points or cci minimags....

To start with spend a little time in rimfire central website. Shooting a 22
or 17 for accuracy out past 100 yds in not very likely. Any kind of wind and
you would be lucky to stay inside 2" groups most days. A great 22 shoots
inside 1" at 100 with consistency and there aren't that many. First of all
every 22 I have ever got to shoot great likes it's "own" ammo.
The ammo your using now is not anywhere near the norm. Target ammo
shots at 1040 fps as a rule.

Head on into the store and buy a box of everything worth trying. Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised by what you find. I'm shooting a bolt action gun, and most of the ammo out there prints pretty good for my purposes. I was worried the high velocity stuff like cci mini mags, american eagle 38 gr and Winchester Super X would not be accurate, but I was pleasantly surprised. Federal bulk 38 grain shot markedly worse than any other but still good enough for a goher at 50 yards. As far as I'm concerned if you can get within 1/2" at 50 yards on the bench, that's plenty good for out in the field.

Have a look at the parallax settings on the scopes generally:
Rimfires @50m (4x), shotgun @75 (2-7x), rifle @100m (3-9..x).

Try the CCI subsonics too (perhaps not cycle your semi as well but some find them more accurate) and with my CZ it seems not matter what I throw into it, all about the same accuracy. Having positive experiences with bulk Federal and CCI minimag worked well too.

If trying different ammo, maybe clean and let build up, dont judge it on the first 5 rounds especially if follow cleaning or different type of ammo. Also, careful not to send them down range consecutively or first type cold barrel next set hot barrel.

Not sure I understand the .17 price ~.223. I may have too many rimfires now, if that wasnt theoretically impossible.

22 and "long range" cannot be used in the same sentence. Most hi velocity ammo goes subsonic beyond 50 meter range and your grouping goes heywire. Standard velocity or subsonics though are very accurate out to 100 but give to much trajectory for any field application.

Stinger are no good out of any pipe. Velocitors are much better pick - deadly accurate and pack a lot of punch.

Your Remongton may not cycle hot-loaded ammo very well. Like stated numerous time above - try every brand and see what works.
