Looking at purchasing a 22 for plinking at the range, either revolver or semi auto pistol. Quality and accuracy primary focus. Any recommendations ? Ive previously shot center fire revolvers and pistols extensively so have no preference as to action type.

Thanx,

Comes up often a Browning Buckmark or Ruger Mark II seems to be the choice for plinking.
Smith & Wesson 617 for revolver and if you really want to get into Bullseye quality a used Smith 41 would be my choice.

^ beat me to it
S&W 617 is a gun that people say will last your lifetime
Colt woodsman
Browning Buckmark I hear are quite accurate
M&P 22 if you want a trainer although at today's prices 9mm is almost the same.
Ruger MKII

One of the most overlooked guns. S&W 22a-1. They discontinued this gun this year. I have one, it's tack driver for just over $300. Probably just as accurate as my S&W Model 41 worth $1500.

I like my GSG1911-22

It had a break in period (frustration!) of about 200 rounds, and has worked flawlessly with everything I've fed it since.

Pretty cheap, very close to weight and feel of the real deal, and fun to shoot!

All good recommendations. A lot of people are also giving high marks to the Beretta 71. Its a well built, accurate plinker for around 400.

I picked up a Model 71 from NAS Guns. They had them on for $269 iirc. Mine had a bit of minor surface rust on one side of the slide and the bluing was worn a bit. I shoot it at almost every range trip I make with the pistols. Really fun little gun.

The main thing with semi .22lr is reliability with lots of different ammo. A fussy .22lr is no fun.

Ruger,Browning,Beretta mod 71 all have a reputation for reliable function with all sorts of ammo.
The GSG1911-22 is a reliable performer as well from what I've seen.

Revolvers don't have the same feed, extraction issues and good buys on the revolver side right now start with the lower priced Alfa Projects, a bit more money for a Ruger SP 101.
S&W Mod 17's are nice if you can find a used one at a fair price.
The Ruger Single Six, specially the older ones(3 screw) are nice if you want to try a single action revolver.

Lots of awesome suggestions from these guys, OP. I had the same question a couple weeks ago, and ended up buying a M&P 22. I just took it out to the range earlier today, and put approx. 360 rounds through it, an even spread of the following :

-CCI Mini Mags
-Federal "Target Grade Performance" (black and white labelled bulk box of 325 rounds)
-Winchester "333 Rounds" bulk box

The CCI ran flawlessly or without and issues I should say,
The federal stuff had 2 failures to feed the next round,
The Winchester had about 6 or 7 failures to feed as well.

I noticed the latter half of shooting the Winchester bulk didn't have any issues whatsoever.
Just a data point for you to consider from a gun newbie, OP.
Good luck choosing, Mitch

For close to $200, a Heritage Rough Rider Single-Six is great.
It also comes with a cylinder for .22 Magnum.
Very accurate. I love its response to every action. Very positive clicks.
This is especially helpful when you're ejecting spent brass, you don't
really have to look that the ejector rod is in front of a chamber. The clicks
and stops are very precise. It needs a half #### and loading gate open
to turn the cylinder for feeding. I love mine.

I have a S&W MP 22 cal - its a Awesome little gun -shoots Great ! :d RJ

I do like the M&P 22, and it was quite reliable, but honestly was very light and felt like a toy.

I have owned almost all of the available .22lr pistols that replicate fullsize centerfire pistols and always find my way back to a Ruger MKIII.

This is my current .22lr plinker, and I like it enough that I just ordered some upgrades.

Ruger 22/45 Lite...

Handguns in .22lr

Personally, as for .22 handguns..... I like the following:

Revolver: S&W 17, 18, 63 or 34

Semi's: Ruger MkII or MkIII; Ruger 22/45's; GSG 1911 .22; Colt .22 conversion unit; Beretta 71
