.22 savage

Do you mean .22 savage hi-power? This caliber is obsolete. You can still find some old savage 99 chambered in this caliber.

"...how do you tell..." Should be on the box or stamped on the case head? The '.22 Savage' is just another name for the .22 Savage High Power.
Epp's is listing a .22 Savage HP, model 99 Takedown with a 20" barrel and a badly cracked stock(on the tang) and a cracked plastic butt plate for $429.
Gunparts and this guy(not Gunparts/Numrich) are both listing Savage 99 butt stocks. I don't know if the 'Takedown' uses the same butt stock or not. I think it does, but I'm not at all sure.
Add the W's. .gun-parts.com/savagestocks/
If you opt for it, I have loading data. It uses a .228" bullet though. E-mail me if you want it.
Huntington's, Stateside says they have 60 and 70 grain bullets. It'd take the U.S. export permit to get 'em though.
Dies will likely be a special order. RCBS makes 'em. Group 'D' dies.
The rifles apparently do not shoot very well. Mind you, the loads I saw on-line may be using .224" bullets.

The .22 Savage high power is another great old cartridge that can work well for you, Hornady may still make the .228 bullets for them but your best bet is using cast bullets sized to your bore dia. Cases are best made from the 25/35, it is possible to make them from the 30/30 but may require neck turning/reaming, good luck with your hunt for a good shooting 99. Ballard and CPA make rifles in this cal. in their single shots but you'll have to save your Pesos.

You may be better off selling them than getting a rifle for them.
We had an old guy in our deer gang that had a Savage 99 in 22 Hi power. He'd bought it in 1929. He was loathe to shoot it as he had a hard time getting ammo. In his younger day he used it on moose in northern Ontario and it was his deer gun in southern Ontario. I wouldn't.

i have a bunch of boxes of .22 savage, but no gun to shoot them! are these guns around still?
sorry if wrong area to post.

The .22 Savage was a popular round in some parts of Europe for hunting Roe deer and IIRC is still available from Norma and perhaps a few other European ammo makers under the metric name of 5.6x52R.

If you look at the combination guns section of Tradeex's site (one of the forum sponsors), they have several rifle/shotgun combos from various European makers in that calibre.

Cheers,

Frank

I own a Savage .22 LR

Its a good gun. Good for plinking, and small game hunting. As far as I know they are still around. I bought mine about 3 years ago new.
