.22 Semi-Auto for plinking - advice?

Hello all, I want to buy a .22 LR semi-auto for plinking, say medium price range ($300-$500). Considering the Beretta Neos, Walther P22, S&W 22, Ruger Standard or Mark III, Browing Buckmark and Sig Mosquito.

Safety and reliability are principal concerns. No intention to do modifications, accessorize, etc. I also have average to small sized hands.

Does anyone have experience / thoughts about these guns they could share? It would be greatly appreciated.

Out of the HG's you've listed, I own 2 of them (so I can't speak for the others).
The Ruger mkiii 22/45 4.5" Slab bbl shoots nice even though I find the "1911 grip" a little thin for my liking. Add the $10 VQ extractor and you'll eliminate the stove-piping. Field stripping takes some practice.
I also have a S&W 41 7.5"bbl with compensator. Don't know if you can find one in your price range but this little HG shoots very accurately. The grip and added weight makes it feel more like the bigger HG's.
Both .22's are fun to shoot.
 
Hi! I own a S&W Model 2206 Stainless "Target" .22 semi-auto pistol. Have had it for 10 years now and highly recommend the S&W 2206 series of .22 autos. The gun is easy to fully take apart and clean and totally reliable and accurate. I have routinely (and to my shame) funnelled well over 500 rounds thru it between any kind of cleanings and the gun never flinched in any way. I bought mine used in 1998 for $375.00 from a local dealer and never regretted - still shoot it currently. They are not made any more, but were for a while. Good luck!

I am with everyone, the Ruger mark III 2245 4.5"slub barrel model are my first choice. I have one, no need to do any modifaction and function 100% out of the box. Dirt cheap.

It has to be de-cocked.

Once the hammer is dropped there is no force on the bolt stop pin and it should slide down, no problem. The first time though, it might be tight and a light rap (with a non-marring mallet) on the top of the pin might be indicated.

As an aside, it is possible for the roll pin at the base of the bolt stop pin to drift laterally and thus prevent disassembly. This would be found on a poorly-maintained, much-shot, pistol, and not-so-much on a new one.
 
I managed to get it apart, but not without a fight. It almost looks like the top of the bolt stop pin is hooked and may have been prevented from coming out by the bolt return spring mechanism which rests agains the bolt stop pin.

The next challenge was dislodging the receiver from the frame, but I finally got it.

I'm going to perform the slingshot mod tonight.
