As my first air rifle, I'm considering buying the BAM 28 air rifle in either .22 or .25 caliber. The .25 has a listed velocity of 720 fps (25 gr pellets?), but reports suggest actual velocity is more like 600 fps. the .22 has a listed velocity of 1000 fps, with actual reports of 820 fps with 15 gr pellets.

Any advice on which caliber will give me the most knockdown power? Will the .25 still be enjoyable for target practice?

Since it's your first air rifle and you want the B28, get the .22. There are more pellet choices and in this case, it produces slightly higher fpe compared to the .25. More fpe and pellet variety equals better pest control and cheaper plinker.

Kinetic energy equals mass (weight) times velocity ( Fps ) squared. Plug in your numbers and you have your answer................:D

There are 15.4323 Grains per Gram, 453.592 Grams per Pound. Have fun................

Here's what the Xisico people told me:

"If you use our 23.9gr 0.25cal pellet, you will get somewhere around 30.41J for 0.25cal XS28. If you use our 13.9gr 0.22cal pellet, you will get 30.24J for 0.22cal XS28."

My question is, will the greater momentum and larger cross-section of the .25 produce greater knockdown power, given that the energy is the same? Or is the difference so slight that I shouldn't worry about it?

Heavier pellets will retain energy better over long distances because of momentum. Cross section wise, obviously .25, but it's not too drastic compared to .17 to .22 Also for note, the type of pellets you use can change that whole ball game. Hence the use of the more venerable .22 which are easier to find and come in greater varieties and weights (I use 15g to 20g pellets). Knock down power is relative so it's hard to judge, but you seemed inclined for the .25 so get what makes you happy. You can't really go wrong with either.
