what are you guy's preferences? 22 magnum vs 17 HMR?

i am thinking of getting a CZ 452, but the european styled rifle that i prefer is not available in 17. it is only available in 22 LR and 22 WMR.

the rifle is basically to be used on gophers, skunks, and paper.

If your gonna keep it to small rodents , the 17 is king. The lux is what your refering to? I know it can be had in 22 LR and 22 mag.
One of the sweetest is the Full stock CZ 452(22 LR ONLY) , eye candy at it best for the asking price.

I am a fan of the 22 Magnum over the .17HMR for the following reason:

- cheaper ammo
- more bullet weight choices to choose from (30-50 grain)
- your able to take bigger game and from my experience the 22 mag hits gophers harder

Out of the box, the .17 is going to be more accurate then the .22 Mag. However, with the rifle you are looking at purchasing, you could count on it shooting the magnum 1-1.25" at 100 Yards. Still, very accurate.

get the 22mag. I have both a Savage in 17HMR and a anchutz 22mag and I take the 22mag gopher hunting all the time. I shoot the remington accu tip rounds into less than an inch at 100 yards and they hit with more authority then than the 17.

Gotta agree the 22 mag is the most fun of the 3 to shoot. Its got power, and is accurate in my long barrel CZ 452 Lux , would not trade it, or put a scope on it. The irons are super :)

i like your style. the 452 lux in 22WMR was what i was looking at in russel sports last week.

22 mag ammo is cheaper than 17 ammo as well.

I have the american model in both 22 and 17HMR. I chose the17 for it accuracy. My buddy has a 22 mag in the ruger 77. Nice rifle but we had to go to the jacketed bullet to get good accuracy. I think the 17 gr bullet out performs the 20gr. The one thing I can tell you if you buy any 17HMR you will giggle every time you shoot a gopher-------Cowboy

17's trajectory is flatter, but why do you say it is more accurate? I don't see how it would be more accurate, or less accurate. Easier to hit things at different distances I guess, because the trajectory's flatter, no question. But if you've been used to the trajectory that's less flat, I don't see how you'd be any less accurate.

I have a Savage 17 HMR heavy barrel and it consistently shoots .5 MOA at 100 meters. I am not sure why people are arguing about stopping power either. The lil 17 cuts gophers up and sends em flying up when shot at ranges up to 150 meters. Few .22 mags will shoot comparably for under 300 bucks.

How well do the 17 shooters here fare on a windy day? Also, from my calcs, the .22WMR hits harder at 100 yds than the .17HMR.

Yep, documented and writen about a few times in various rifle magazines.

At 100 yards the hmr is just starting to get fun in a gopher field, 150 - 200 is more like it, and at 100 yards the hmr catches up to most 22 mag loads (short of federals 50 grain thumper) this is from the federal catalog

Yes it blows around but no more than 22 mag I got a graph for that too but I am too lazy.

Damn Mid January and I have already broken my resolution to never again post on a 17 hmr vs 22 mag thread.

PS. I consider neither coyote rounds

I have shopped around ... read article and posted a few threads on this site ...conclusion ... I think the best choice for overall performance , price, choice and availability of ammo , is the 22 Mag

I am picking mine up at the shop tomorrow ... Remington 597 equiped with a bushnell 3X9X40 scope ... Ya I now ... what can I say I need a scope to compensate for poor eyes. I can t wait to try it out
