22 WMR vs 17 HMR

.22 mag. or 17 HMR ?

I have to agree with Bulls-eye , i have a winchester 9422 M , i have taken ground hogs out to 150 yards with it and the 40 grain jacketed hollow piont does the job --one shot . I have tried the .17 hmr , it's a great round (2600 fps ) but my only misgiving would be down range 150 yds. or more that 17grain bullet , don't know if it would hold up if even a low crosswind would kick up ? It is very accurate , and fun to shoot . I think if you want a medium powered round , for 150 yds. to 200 yrds., with some wind bucking quailties i go for a .22 Hornet or 218 Bee , at the low end if you wanted to move up a notch .222 rem , or 223 . All these are low report , low recoil , accurate ,not costly to shoot .I have had my Winchester for 33 years now and i wouldn't part with it for anything , i not saying you can go to the Omlypics with it but it's been great fun shoooter.. some of the bolt action's (eg: Marlin , $ Savage) are making good sport field rifle at reasonable prices , and their well worth a look. I use a Savage 93G or F (samething) 22mag, (5 shot bolt repeater) it's a lot of fun to shoot.
I'm using 45g Dynapoints from Wally-mart. ($6.73 a box, cheapest store bought around here).
Federals didn't work all that well in either of these guns, CCI's Maxi-Mag+5's do really well also.

A friend of mine has the exact model although in a wood stock where mine is a plastic stock.
Both are great shooters and accuarcy is not a question here, it's a fact.

However mine took a bit of figuring out from the start before it was accurate.

With the plastic stock the barrel was able to move around freely as it wanted within the barrel channel of the stock, the barrel is held to the receiver by a single screw from the bottom. This allowed the barrel to move around in the wide open spaces of the stock while the scope stayed put on the receiver, the wooden stock had the barrel tightly secured in place. I almost sold the thing and bought one in wood, but with the help of a back of the truck made barrel/stock ring fixed everything instantly (thank goodness for trident hose clamps and black tape).
It's not pretty, but the hose clamp later was incorperated with a mount for a bipod. Works great.
All in all with a scope and added features this little nail driver weighs in at 4.125LBS (nothing).
Although I don't have any experience with the 17, they sound neat, but this is my two cents on the 22Mag, and something to watch out for when thinking about one with a molded plastic stock.

.17HMR.... loads of fun to shoot, extremely accurate, flat trajectory. Just absolutely ideal for those ground rats.:D
