Commercial ammo isn't mfg'd using canister powders. The propellant companies make lots of powder, test the lot to see if it's in the criteria of a labelled product (like IMR3031, H380 etc.) and if not they sell it to ammo makers, who in turn test it and use it in there cartridges. In other words, you'll probably never be able to duplicate factory ammo.

I see with some of the latest powders, the 221 can be loaded at it's higher pressure and be equal to or better than the 222.

I just bought a 221 from a member here and he was using RL7 under 50 gr Baillistic Tips with good results. I haven't got out to try it yet though.

The term for this is Data Powder. The SP-81, SP-83, SP-85 powder sold at Higginson would fall into this catagory. There is nothing wrong with it. It just requires the time to test and the wisdom to stop early if the pressure signs begin to appear.

Not too long ago I acquired a Remington XP-100 with a Leupold M8 2X & I've just started 'playing' with it. I'm testing a selection of V-MAX bullets. To start out with I went with the results listed in the new Hornady sixth edition manual (pg.615) and am getting good results with IMR 4198 & IMR 4227. I also found a favourable note on IMR 4198 in the new Sierra Rifle & Handgun manual, edition V (pg. 838). The next items I want to try are some Sierra Blitzking bullets, 40 & 50gr. I believe they are compareable, results wise, to the V-MAX.:)

i am shooting 221 out of a CZ rifle, and most load books are listing loads for the XP 100.ive done some experimenting with 4198 with pritty good results to.

My old Lyman book gives IMR4227, IMR4198 and IMR3031 for 40 gr, 45 gr and 50 gr jacketed bullets. The factory duplication load with 50 grain bullets is 17.6 grains of IMR4198. 2400 and IMR4227 for cast. However, like bisonhd, says, you can't buy the powders used in factory ammo.

Yes, I've had good results with IMR 4198 & IMR 4227 and I'll most likely stick with those two powders. I have recently picked up the new Hornady two volume reloading set and the new Sierra Rifle & Handgun reloading Data manual, both of which have separate reloading data for both rifle & handgun. Sierra did their rifle load tests with a Howa 1500 and in their section, single shot pistols, used a Remington XP-100. Hornady used a Remington 700 Classic for the rifle data and a Remington XP-100.:) :)
