hey guys i was woundering if there were any calibers smaller then a 222 rem avalable in canada. i was thinking about the 17 rem fireball but the ammo dosnt seem to be produce heavely. im going to be using it for fox and yotes and even smaller game. i was also consedering a 223 because of the ammo prices! thanks!!

If foxes and small Game is what your looking to shoot AND if pricing of Ammo is a big deal 17 HMR is a decent round. Cheap AMMO and does a relatively good job on coyotes.

.204 Ruger is a spectacularly quick round (32gr Hornady Handloads Chronied at well over 4000fps). I have shot many coyotes and beavers with it.

If your looking for ease of Ammo purchasing then .17HMR, .204 Ruger, and .223 REM are all readily available.

Lots of choices and all the rounds mentioned are good rounds.

Foxes and all things smaller .17hmr would be great round. If planning to do more yote hunting I'd probably go with centerfire. in any of above mentioned caliber

Sounds to me like you want to shoot factory ammo in this rifle you are buying. I would think that the most accurate factory ammo you can buy today would be in the 204 Ruger caliber. 221 Fireball is only made by Remington and is quite expensive.
222 is a great round but there isn't much to choose from for factory ammo. FS

how exspencive is the .221 rem fireball? i was also thinking of it.

It's a great fun caliber, and will give you good performance and long barrel life....But it's freakin' spendy! Ammo by Remington is $35 for a box of 20! Bulk brass is $60 for a bag of 100! And that's Remington brass, not good stuff like Lapua.
Nosler is making .221 Fireball ammo now; but I've read that they are using Remington brass.

If you want to shoot one of the rounds mentioned i would advise to get into reloading, the exception is the 223. The others are not as well stocked in most gunshops, they will usually carry a limited assortment of bullet choices and manufactures. Everybody carries 223 as it is more popular. I have several different cartridges and they are all lots of fun and may serve a different purpose. My current favorite is a 204, great on varmints. I have a 17 rem project that has been ongoing for a couple of years, may finish it this winter. Any way you go they are cheap to reload compared to most and fun to shoot they don`t kick the hell out of you. Pick one and have fun.

I'd get .223. Ammo is everywhere and the price is right if you don't handload. Easier to sell too, tons of brass and has a faster twist in the barrel for more bullet choices. Don't get caught up in odd cartridges if this is your first time. A .223 will bring down any coyote easily.

Why go lower than .222? That is a fine and accurate round. In fact I think the .222 is the most underrated round out there.

If you insist on a "smaller" caliber skip the .17 and go straight to the .204.

The .17 Hornet is a pretty cool little cartridge, and Hornady has legitimized it, although I'm not sure if their version is the .17 Hornet of the .17 K Hornet. Either way the rimmed case makes it a great candidate for use in a falling block single shot.
