Hi,I just purchased a Brno ZKK 601 in .222 rem.It seems to be in good to very good condition.Does anybody know a value for these firearms and the availability of ammo. How will this rifle preform as a varmint rifle? Thanks 'bandit.

Don't know about the value, but ammo is very available and not to bad for price. The 222 is very accurate and was used as a bench rest rifle in the 50\60's. I sold mine recently as I found it a little small but for varmints it should be great. I think you will like it. If you reload I have 20-40 free brass for you if interested. Mind you, you have to figure out shipping.

222 is near ideal for a calling predator gun. Inside 250 yards it will do anything a 22-250 will but with less noise. A 50 gr @ 3200 fps is pretty good medicine

I have two, I like them a lot. Heavy barrel for varminting, and a Rem 600 for coyotes. Very accurate caliber in most guns. You can still get loaded ammo and brass easily. Not as popular as it used to be, because of the military's use of the 223, but I find the 222 tends to be a little more accurate- dan

.222

Bought a used Brno Fox .222 with double /set trigger about 8 years ago for about a $350 trade value .357 S&W. Useing Imr 4198 and most any bullet from 40 to 55 grains the rifle will shoot under an inch if I do my part. Have only shot targets... and crows around the 200 yd mark.

Brass is commonly available and fairly inexpensive and can be made from .223 if you like too.
The cartridge responds very well to reduced loading also for small varmints..can replicate .22 long rifle....22 mag..and 22 hornet velocities with proper handloads and still get one inch/100 yds.

I have one in a remington 788. Ugly, but charming and phenomenally accurate. I shoot 40 grain nosler BT's over military surplus 735 powder, for about 3500-ish fps. I also worked out some reduced loads with Hornet bullets and Blue dot powder - accurate enough, but I have an actual Hornet that I like to use. Actually, now that I think about it, the 222 is completely surplus to my needs; I have a Hornet, I have a 223... yet I can't bring myself to sell it.

one of the guys i go varminting with uses a .222 exclusively - he loves the thing. ive shot it a few times and it was very accurate despite being one of the old sporter weight barreled Remington 700 CDLs (or BDL? whatever).

i never would buy one myself simply because the performance is nearly identical to the .223 yet .223 ammo is significantly cheaper and more widely available.

but when im lugging around my 14lb varmint rig hes walking along comfortably with his 8lb scoped rifle, the bastard :ninja:

his success rate seems to be as good as mine when it comes to bagging groundhogs with the .222 CDL vs my .223 700P rig, but im sure much of that comes from the fact that hes been shooting them since before i was born and is probably just a better shot :)

In the varmint field, the only real advantage of a heavy barrel is that you can shoot it more between cool down periods. A sporter weight barrel can be made to shoot every bit as accurately as an HB under real-world varminting conditions, but you'll only get a half dozen shots before it's too hot and POI starts to drift.

I have a couple lightweight varminters for walking around shooting (usually at shorter distances; an application I find an ideal match for a Hornet), and a few heavier ones for shooting from fixed positions to targets a bazillion miles away

my savage 340 in 222 with a tasco 24x scope and a custom modified bipod, I use this rifle to 250yds accuratly with factor 50 gr loads

Oooo! A 340! I had one of those in 30-30 for a while - I liked it, neat little gun. I keep my eyes open for one in 22 Hornet to pop up in the EE at a decent price

I just bought a remy 600 in 222 got 3 boxes of handloads with it , supriseingly accurate , but there was that one super duper load that swelled the brass to the point that it had to be forcefully removed from the bolt . I havent found anyone that stocks ammo locally , but they can order it for me no problem . Really fun to shoot enjoy .;)
