Well I originally posted about recipes for the mag in the recipe forum but only had a whopping 11 views today so I am posting here now. I have had a few triple deuces before and they all shot ridiculously accurate but I am now getting a mag so I need some input.

The last time I used one it was in Australia - to shoot kangaroos.

I used Hornady 55 gr SP and Varget (as we now call it).

I assumed loading data could be extrapolated from 223 data.

222 Mag has slightly more powder capacity.

I've owned a couple of them in the past, simply because when the Rem 223 came out, a lot of people switched over to the much cheaper cartridges and as Ganderite says, almost identical performance with the bullets available at the time and seeing as my finances back then were tight, they were going cheap.

The first 222 mag was a lovely custom rifle, built on a European CZ action that had a steel mag well and steel magazine. It was very accurate and I used it exclusively on Coyotes for at least five years. I miss that handy/accurate little rifle. The next one was a factory Remington 700 SA, in a McMillan stock. It was even more accurate than the CZ but wouldn't shoot bullets over 50 grains well, unless they had a flat base.

Getting brass for those rifles was also tedious and even when I ordered it through my local gunshop, it took months to appear.

If you can find a decent source for brass, go for it. It's a great cartridge and if it's possible get the barrel with a 1-8 twist to utilize the extra case capacity with heavier bullets.

Don't shoot the messenger but I would get a .223 simply because of the abundance of brass instead of the .222 magnum.

My buddy has a .222 magnum and also has problems getting new brass.

I can buy bulk once fired Lake City 5.56 brass for a fraction of the cost of new brass.

Again don't shoot the messenger but cheap bastards need love too. ;)

How did you end up in Oz with all those Ozmaniacs shooting Skippy the Kangaroo?

You could have shot thousands of Cain toads with a .458 Winchester magnum and not harmed poor little Skippy the Kangaroo. :bangHead:

Shots fired at the messenger!
I can't believe you guys would try to sway me from buying a 222 mag - Shame on you!!!! They are faster and more accurate than a 223. I get it though, unless I shoot over a chrony every time I won't notice the difference. Nosler makes brass for it and its not overly expensive. The gun is a Browning Safari pencil weight in excellent shape. I need a 222 mag because I have a fever. And the only prescription is a 222 rem mag. I hand load so this will be fun.

H4895, Benchmark, H322 and 8208xbr are good powders for the 222 mag. 204 ruger brass can also be used just run it through a 222 mag die. 222 mag is superior round to the 223 rem. in every way and the only reason 223 became so popular is because the US military adopped it instead of the mag. If the military would have chosen the 222mag instead we would all be shooting it instead.

For many years I have shot a Steyr Model SL Varmint in .222 MAG. Heavy barrel & double set triggers . My load has always been
27.2 gr. of Win. 748 with a 55 gr. Hornady PSP # 2265 , with great results . I sight in @ 200 yds. & at 300 yds have a 2-3" group
dropping 8". I also shoot a .222 in a BSA Hunter using V-max. Hornady Bullets. Because of it's great accuracy I will be using those
V-Max bullets in the .222 MAG as well . Both guns have had great long range kills on coyotes .
Also ,,,, .222 MAG is mostly = .223 . My used Steyr came in the .222 MAG. so that is what I have & like it.

Good to hear. I have lots of all those powders in stock!
