A few years ago (20+) was looking at a Sako 222 at the Toronto gunshow. It was about the size of a 22 mag, a short-short action, beautiful wood, and very simple/understated design. For the life of me I can't remember the model, but I find myself wanting one.

The requirements I have are:
Short action (small), and gun scaled to the size of the small action
222
No sights preferably a heavy barrel, again scaled to proportions of the action (so this would be somewhere between a standard and heavy barrel weight)
Clip feed
Simple understated look and feel, but quality (like sako)
As accurate as possible
Who might have something like this to carress in a shop in the Kingston, ON area (Ott, Tor)
Are the Sako vixens scaled to the small actions, I want a 222 that feels like 22mag in a good quality gun.

Another possibility is a rebarreled action to meet the heavy barrel idea, but I prefer the price and simplicity of off the rack.

Any ideas.

I've thought about the Ruger 77/22Hornet and it might do, but the 20" barrel length on the wood stock model looks to short and I'm not sure about the lam without checkering and the 24" barrel.
I really want the 222 and clip feed and a properly proportioned gun.

The Ruger 77/22 H is not a particularly nice rifle, and I sure could not get mine to shoot worth a hoot. But rembo had one and his was exceptionally accurate, go figure.

Sounds like you want a DETACHABLE mag? If you just want a magazine fed rifle (but the mag is not removable) I would say Remington 600. Drop by and try mine out if you want, but it is not for sale. I do see these go by a few times a year and can keep an eye out for you.

here's mine. It's a very short action, no sights (though there are tapped holes for installing them), and a medium heavy contour barrel. No frills at all, but the 788's have a reputation for excellent accuracy and the action sure seems sturdy enough

And here's my 77/22VHz with the medium heavy barrel. Picky to load for, but I have found a load that will consistently group under an inch. Not little tiny bugholes, but more than sufficient to whack a gopher out to 250 or so yards, beyond which you'll want more power and less drop anyway

check out a new Brno/CZ 527 in 222.....also made in 22 Hornet...I just picked up one in 221 Fireball...which is another cartridge you should consider...the Sako models L46, L461 and A1 are the small actions for 222 etc.

Yep Rembo it was a L461 Vixen what a nice one that is.
Thanks Doug, I'll drop you a line next year and take up on that offer.
Sorry guys the I've never been a remington rifle fan even BDLs, can't really say why
The Ruger looks ok in real wood but the barrel is too shoret and no checkering on the lam , not for me

Now that CZ 527, that ones close. I'm gonna have to see one of those.
The Varmit, American, or prestige all look pretty cool to me. Might have to go with 223 but that's ok. Where does the 221 fireball and the 204 ruger fit in to the 22 cal line up.

The fireball is a shortened 223. Performs similarly to the 222 despite its smaller
capacity - it's loaded to higher pressures than the deuce. The 204 offers the recoil, blast and powder consumption (and barrel life, apparently) of the 223, while providing the trajectory of a 22-250. It's my varminter of choice for rodents a long way away :D

Yes, and surprised it took even just this long for the CZ's to come up, they are the smallbore value in my opinion, and have a detachable magazine as well, as per your specs. They are available in all the cals mentioned here in one model or another; ,204, .221 (my favorite), .222, .223, .22 Hornet etc. They are also factory equipped with single set triggers, a huge bonus.

Thanks fogducker, but Kingston is a little far. Oh well, but if I get up that way on my own time I'll see if you have time to show me around your patch.
I think I am looking for the Sako or an equal on this one, this one will be a keeper when I get what I want.
