.223 52 or 53 grainers?

Fellow nutz,

I was thinking of getting some match bullets from sierra for my 1 in 12 barrel. The 52 gr matchking is a boat tail and 53 gr seems to be flat base. Which one should I get and Why.

From the readings I have done a flat base should give me more velocity buts its accuracy i'm looking for this time.

Any info appreciated!!

I had great results with the 52 gr matchking bullets in my Winchester Model 70 Lightweight. Never tried the 53 gr offering though.

what range are you shooting at? I would go with a 68 69gr boat tail bullet or heavier for stability.Flat base works excellent also my rifle prefers the boat tail. They have worked very well for me at close and long range. The lighter bullets just don't do it at longer distances. Check out

LRC, I agree and would like to shoot heavier bullets, but since my twist is 1 in 12, I doubt I can shoot much more than 55 maybe 60 gr...

60's would probably work ok, I know they work in my 1-14 twist 22-243 Middlestead. I can't get anything heavier then that to stabilize tho'. Other then that, what Tod said. Try a little of each and see what the rifle likes. - dan

I second this motion. However, boat tails are easier to reload.

Dan what velocity are you getting out of the .22-243? The velocity may be helping stabalize that heavy a bullet in the 14 twist bbl. My 12 twist .223 shoots pretty good with 50 gr. vmax, but haven't had time to work up loads for anything else yet. Was at the range this morning for four hours but too cold and windy to wait out the conditions. Can say that my new XR-100 in .223 looks like it will shoot though!!!!
