My shooting partner wants to spin up a .223 practice barrel for his AI AT. He already has ones in .308 and 6.5mm but has worn out the barrel on his Tikka trainer and rather than rebarrel that, he asked me if he could take advantage of the quick change barrel feature on the AT and have a .223 barrel made.

My initial reaction was probably not, but I was wondering if anyone had made the attempt. Obviously a new bolt is required and a customized magazine of some sort.

It sure makes sense to keep your competition platform as your cheaper practice rifle too and only buying one high end optic would defray the cost.

Thoughts?

Guys have asked for years over on SH and the answer is always no with regards to a .223 AI bolt. A magazine would also have to be made.

Just rebarrel the trainer.

I have looked into this as well, you would have to machine your own bolt, magwell adapter and spin up a custom barrel. For that cost you might as well buy a Rem 700. 223 and put it in an AI chassis if you want to train on the same chassis

I would pay 2k for a conversion for my AX.

I have a feeling it could be done for that price and I considering an AX chassis costs more than that it would be worth it.
