223 Bolt Action for Precision Training?

OP, do you handload? if so, 223 can be made to perform. I won a 1000 yard match shooting a 223 with 80 gr Sierra bullets.

In a test at 1000 yards, i shot 20 rounds of 223 and 20 rounds of 308 at the same target, and compared the group widths. The 223 was slightly narrower. i.e. it handled the wind better than the 308. Sierra 155 vs Sierra 80.

Ganderite, What velocity and barrel length did you use for the 223?

No don't hand load yet... The challenge with 223 is finding a factory rifle with fast enough twist rate for the heavier bullets.. A factory rifle that won't cost a huge amount at the outset but can be upgraded later of necessary..

There are RH guys who actually prefer to shoot LH rifles and vice versa... No kidding.

They say it is an advantage because they can keep their finger on the trigger and cycle with a hand that isn't busy.

And there are a lot of left-eye-dominant shooters who find it easier to shoot left-handed because it puts the sights/scope where they need it.

Should also mention a shooter I was working with who would have weighed under 100 pounds soaking wet, right-handed but left-eye-dominant, who really wanted to give a Mosin Nagant a good workout, and who shot each way until both shoulders hurt too much to continue. Full points for dedication!

I'm thinking about attempting precision handloading, and thinking 223 might be the ideal starting calibre for being able to compare results against factory ammo and see that the precision effort really does make a difference.
