I bought one of those Wolverine $399 CZ carbines in 223. These have 11.5” barrels. My old eyes cannot use open sights at the best of times, and are hopeless with a short sight radius. A peep was installed to replace the open sight, and with my pistol shooting glasses, I can see the front sight quite well.
Today I was testing 55gr and 62 gr ammo in my Norc M4, plus ran a muzzle brake test with the Norc and a pair of CZ rifles in 223 and 7.62.
I used the opportunity to test some ammo in the 223 CZ at 50 yards. I did this once before and the results were surprisingly good. Three things are clear to me:
1. Just like the Norc M4, the milder ammo worked better than the hotter stuff.
2. The 55 gr bullets do better than the 62 (just like the Norc).
3. This little carbine has excellent accuracy.
The 22 gr of a powder similar to BLC2 is only about 2300fps, but it was enough to cycle the action 100%. I think this will be my new CQB load. I shoot CQB with my Norc M4, but the CZ has been my back up rifle (I like the irons if it is raining) and it is the rifle I lend to newbies because it is 100% reliable and simple to operate.
I also ran a muzzle brake test after this accuracy test. The groups were shot with a AK type brake like this:
but after the brake test, I concluded that this one was better:
I will have to test the good loads again with the different brake. I guess there is a chance the accuracy or zero might be changed.
I was pressed for time, so only shot half the range of powder charges. Fortunately, I elected to test the three mildest loads of the two bullet weights because it is clear the milder loads shot best.
