Hey guys, this is one forum where I feel "I'm not worthy" to post, but perhaps you could lend me some advice~I'm looking at getting a Savage 10 Precision Carbine (1" in 9 twist) for hunting out to 300 yards. Most shots will be under 200 I'm sure, but I'm interested in knowing if the 20" barrel on this rifle will work against me velocity-wise. What exactly is lost, and will it make any tangible difference on targets out to 300 yards? (groundhogs/coyotes)

Thanks,
Rob

Count on loosing close to 100 fps as compared to a 26" barrel. If you keep your shots to 300 yards bet you won't see much of a performance difference on a coyote.

ha ha ha It's all good. I've used a 20" 1 in 9" twist to 800m (not yards  ) at Connaught Ranges during my NSCC adventures. I like launching the 75 gr Amax bullets up to that distance and I never felt outgunned! :D

Currently my latest build is a .22-250 chambered (from a .223 1 in 9" twist M700 SPS Tactical barrel) and ready to launch (you guessed it... ) more 75 grain Amax bullets this coming August 2011 at the DCRA's NSCC shoots. Now if only my school board's calendar will not conflict that Labour Day weekend.

Have at 'er with the .223 fun!

Cheers,
Barney

Thanks guys. I see there is another thread after mine about .223s and 26" barrels. I'll keep an eye on this thread, and welcome any more input.

Thanks again,
Rob
