Hey,

I'm looking into 223 build in a rem 700 footprint with MDT aics mags. Currently Zermat Origin is probably my choice with a IBI prefit, triggertech and MDT stock.

Would anyone recommend an action most appropriate for that? I mostly interested in flawless cycling. Getting really tired with feeding and ejection issues on a small cartridge in an oversized action. Should I look into conical breach or something like that to make it work better?

Thanks

I have a Left Hand Pristine action mated to a 204 Ruger barrel by Bob Jury, a Trigger Tech Primary and a factory Remington stock with a hinged floor plate.
I am very pleased with the action...silky smooth and easy fit for all the accessories.
Very accurate coyote rig 👍

Does it have a bit of a bind going forward from fully opened or these are just rumors?

A magazine fed Tikka M55 in 223 runs flawlessly from a detachable magazine and it has a reverse ‘cone’ barrel face. A post’64 Winchester model 70 HB Varmint feeds fine from its ‘box’ magazine with drop plate. Never heard of any problems with the Remington 7615 feeding from LAR mags. These are three different set-ups and seem to be fine.

I think you're looking in the right place with the Zermatt Origin.
I went with a Cadex 7 stars. Shoots great, but if I burn this barrel out, I'll be doing a controlled round feed next time.

Could you expand on that? Is it something specific to 223 feeding or in general any bolt action caliber?

Largely it's just the size of the cartridge vs the size of the action. When they 'pop' out of the magazine they CAN move around and shift a bit more. Where as controlled round feed is held against the bolt face, it never 'pops' out of the magazine, and is held steady as it places the round into the center of the chamber.

My 7 stars functions fine, but I haven't been racing with it. And this may just be lingering concerns from my Rem700 5R in 223. Shot phenomenally well, but fed from the internal hinged floor plate and the 'pop' out of the magazine could be problematic.
