.223 info?

The savage 12vss has a 1/9 twist, it is not possible to stabalize the Hornaday bullet with this rifle (the bullet is too long), I have a Rem700vss in 223 with the same twist, I tried for a month to get a load to work, I later found that C.E.Harris published a formula allowing you to calculate, bullet length, twist, velocity and stability, to stabalize this Hornaday bullet in a 1/9 twist rifle you need a velocity of 3731 fps to achive marginal stability, that would give a pressure of 171,512 psi, your rifle would fail at 62,366 psi. Hornaday makes a shorter 75 gr bthp which can achieve minimal stabiltiy at 300 fps, this velocity is achievable but stability would be minimal.
The heaviest bullet I can find that will achive optimum stability at 3000 fps is the 73 gr Berger LTB.
As far as I can tell the max lenght of a 75gr bullet in .223 that will be stable at 3000fps is 0.941 in. I do not know anyone who makes such a bullet but if you find one let me know.

i have used the 75 AMAX in my savage 12fv with decent results. 25 grains of varget, bullet touching lands which is 2.505" in my rifle, 3050 fps. best i could do was 5 shots in about 5/8". They have to be close to or into the lands though. i tried some at 2.280" and couldn't do better than 3" at 100 yds. the 75BTHP is a better choice though as you can use them in the mag and they will shoot under an inch.

I guess it depends on your use, bullets touching the lands won't load in the mag so its one shot at a time, with the 73 grain bullets you are talking .25 inch groups at 100 yards and under .75 inch at 300. In my rifle using 75 gr Amax, and an OAL that would fit in the mag well I could not hit an 11x14 inch sheet of paper at 300 yards yet could get the above groups with the 73 grain bullet loaded to a standard OAL that would allow you to load a full mag. For 2 more grain I do not think the loss of accuracy is worth it. Where I live the Berger bullets were cheaper than the Hornady Amax's
