I am just getting into the reloading game. I have a slow twist (1:12) Rem 700 BDL .223 that I want to load up some 50gr VMAX's for. I have been reading about temp sensative powder and am thinking of going with either Varget or H4895.

Not sure what primers to try and feeling a little nervous about compressed loads. Everything I have read says it's fine but the idea of compressing gunpowder witha primer under it in a press feels like taking off in an airplane into a thunderstorm. It just ain't right:)

Anyhow, just wondering what people are using out there for similar rigs and how much of an increment I should work up in when developing a load.

Does one powder flow or measure easier than the other?

Thanks

Paul

When I first got a 223 I purchased one of Hodgdon's powder packs, where you buy four 4oz containers of powder, if they still sell these it would be a great starting point. I settled on H4895 and Federal primers as it gave me the best accuracy for the bullets I chose ( 50g Hornady SPSX). As far as compressed charges if stay within the manuals recommendations they are perfectly safe and sometimes give the best consistency. Now that you've started reloading you'll be trying all sorts of combinations to get that "magic group" Have fun

Your powder choice is fine for strait target shooting the Sierra 53gr match really work well. And for hunting go near max with Varget app: 27gr +or- check your reloading book
with 55gr Nosler Ballistic tips

"...a little nervous about compressed loads..." Compressed loads are nothing to worry about. The powder just gets tamped down by the bullet during seating.

Ball powders meter the smoothest yet stick powders can still be thrown accurately.I use an RCBS powder meter and it handles H4895 well, the only powder that gives me fits is IMR 4350 which of course is not useful in a 223.
