I need a tried and true basic load for mag length rounds with Varget for 68 gr Hornady BTHP or Sierra 69gr for my 1-9" twist 16" Bushmaster for a 3 Gun Match this weekend. I haven't the time to develop something AND get some zero's at the local range.

In my bolt gun I used 23.0 gr of Varget, but I was seating at 2.330" not 2.260" and am worried about overdoing the pressures (for accuracy).

What works in the AR?

I used to use 26gr of Varget with the 69gr SMK in my AR seated to mag lenght. It is a hot load and not one to jump right into without working up to it but based on this I'd guess your load would be fine.

Agreed. Your load of 23 gr of Varget loaded to mag length (2.250-2.260) should be just fine. I use 23.5 gr of R15 or Varget with the same bullet loaded to this length and it is quite mild, and accurate enough.

See you at the match, and will compare notes.

OK....so I'm close then?

Here's a weird one for you -

My 55gr VMAX w. 25.0gr Varget shoots lower than
my 68gr H. BTHP w. 23.0gr Varget by about 2" at a 25yd test target.

Is that normal????? Shouldn't the heavier bullet shoot lower?

Hornady 68 gr. HPBT
25 grains of Varget
Winchester Cases (1.750")
Winchester Primers
2.250" OAL

The above load averages 2950fps out of a Colt 20" 1:7 HBAR.

same same but switch the 68 gr. Hornady with a 69 grain SMK & go with 25.5 grains of varget is a good load for the SMK.

The 69smk is a shorter bullet than the Hornady, and may fair a bit better in your barrel, but you won't know until you do a bit of testing. Considering you have no time really for testing, I'd recommend the SMK to start.
