ok, i have been itching at getting a new gun since i sold my 10/22, but i have a dilemma!
i was looking at a marlin heavy barrel in .17 hmr(917 i think), mainly as a plinker and for the occasional varmint hunt.
i know a guy with a rem 788 in .223 that may be for sale, hopefully quite cheap, and i have been told that it groups quite nice.
now, my question pertains to range, in that how does the .17 hmr's 17 grain bullet handle out to say 200 yards? or is it simply for 100 yards and in? for paper and 4 leggers each respectively? also, what is the max critter size for the hmr?(gopher, rabbit, fox, coyote)
ammo seems to be pretty comparable give or take a bit, and i do reload for my 7mm saum, so loading for the 223 is not an issue.
