Hi Im looking to get a long range shooter for varmint such as coyote an paper targets. I will be shooting factory ammo for now an may get into reloading later down the road. I was looking at buying the Tikka or savage with a heavy barrel. This is just for fun shooting no compatitions so if anyone could tell me what might be my better option that would be great thank's. Oh and if you know of a good scope to use that would be great to thank's.

Take care Shaner

Out of the 2 you picked I would go with a 223. Cheaper means more ammo and trigger time. I have a tikka varmint in 223 with a bushnell tactical 5-15 that is a pleasure to shoot. Little more expensive but you wont regret it.

Pretty broad desires but I will assume by fun you want something that is inexpensive and easy to load for. I would recommend a .223 with a fast twist barrel - shoot all ranges with that calibre. A good scope? What amount do you want to spend? I wouldn't go any lower then a bushnell elite but the sky is the limit for better optics.

Look at the Remington 700 Varmint in .223Rem (WOW) beautiful laminated wood stock, and a super heavy 26" barrel. Available in both .223 & .22-250, check it out....note: pics wont do you justice, if you can hold that sucker, you will be sold.

Or a Remington 700 Police in .223Rem, same benefits, but in all matte black (stay away from those light rifles, with pencil skinny barrels....you need a monster with a bi-pod and a super heavy barrel and light factory trigger = Rem 700 Varmint & Rem 700 Police

.22-250 ammo is easier to find. I never find cheaper .223 then .22-250. Maybe the FMJ rounds are cheaper if you buy bulk. .223 ammo may be harder to find in coming years from the war....

I have a rem 700 .223 that I use for coyotes and groundhogs.

if you reload go with a 22-250. If not get the .223 . I don't know what the one guy was talking about but I find 22-250 more expensive and harder to find than .223 witch is usually at Canadian tire and wallmart.

The 22-250 is IMO a much better round tho.

Thank's everyone for the reply. I would only be shootin 3 to 4 hundred yards so i guess a 223 would cover all my need's. I am more concerned about accuracy and quality than cheap shooting maybe I should have mention that.

speed is what makes a varmint round exceptional. This makes the 22-250 the clear winner of the two.

I personally prefer the 204 ruger fpr varmints. Incredibly flat shooting, Cheap ammo, blistering speed and zero recoil. Barrel life on par with the 22-250.

I really like the 223, mainly due to less muzzle jump compared to 22-250. My 22-250 experience has been in medium weight sporters so maybe in a heavy barrel rig it wouldn't be as bad.

A heavy 22-250 with a 8 or 9 twist barrel would be interesting!

I have both and used them today on a all day gopher shoot on my ranch. I like the range advantage of the 22-250, but I like the miserly appetite for powder of the 223. given the ranges you're talking, my nod would be the 223 with a fast twist barrel for the heavier bullets. Good luck and beware, long range shooting is highly addictive

Remember a great gun is nothing with out good ammo.

you can hit stuff with cheep ammo but ur consistency in accuracy will suffer

I have always been a fan of the 22-250. If you don’t ever plan on reloading the Tikka or Savage will be fine. If you want to reload I would say go with the savage. Most Savages have a 1-12 twist while the Tikkas have a 1-14. The 1-12 on the savage will let you experiment with a little heavier bullets than the Tikka.

I will say that it is hard to see POI with the 22-250. It has just enough kick that you lose sight threw the scope. The .223 is a bit milder and you can watch your shot. The 22-250 is a flatter shooting round and will also hit with more energy at 400 yards. I sight my 22-250 in 1.5" high at 100 and am around 7 inches low at 300. In the end you will be happy with either round.
