Greetings,

The wee lady doesn't know it yet, but she will be getting a Rem 700 SPS Tactical from me for Xmas - She has always longed for a really "accurate" rifle to kill paper with, and sadly, still fears the .303 recoil.

At any rate, looking for recommendations for a telescope that will be used primarily for paper punching, at this point our range is limited to 200 metres, but no sense in cheaping out.

I know very little about "tactical" or "sniper" scopes, but I do like the theory of mildots for bullet drop calculations - Are there such beasts for .223, or is everything calibrated for .308?

Thanks for your thoughts!!

Neal

I am very happy with Tasco illuminated mildot 6-24x40, it's got front parallax which is useful as a rangefinder. Using it @12-16 most of the time. It's a bit demanding for eye relief at higher magnifications.

As long as you are not going to "cheap out", maybe consider a Leupold Mark IV, with the bullet drop cams. It has mil dot reticle and BDC cams for 30-06, .308, and .223.

Side focus, somewhat low-profile knobs (compared to the target knobs), and a 30mm tube. It would look great in TPS rings on that rifle!

I have had an Elite 4200 4-16x40 on my 223 for a couple of years now and it is a very nice scope. However I have it mounted on a Ruger no 1b 223 and it does not have enough eye relief to see all of the scope even with setback rings and shortening the stock. Apparently a problem with the no 1s because the mount is so far forward. Dave at Reliable Gun in Vancouver seems to have solved that problem with a Nikon Buckmaster which not only has a much longer eye relief but also has a longer tube to boot along with killer optics. I think the Buck is only 4-14 but that should not be a problem. Fun calibre to shoot. Enjoy and happy shooting. Nice used one in the Optics Exchange forum.

Give your approx. budget and there will be a somewhat narrower list of scopes that would be recommended. At the entry level BSA, Tasco and Bushnell. At the higher level then again Bushnell, Leupold, Zeiss or just about any other scope in a higher magnification with parallax adjustment. Phil.

Take a look herehttp://www.nightforceoptics.com/ they make a mighty fine scope, I use a Benchrest model 8xto 32x with the NP 2DD double dot reticale, can't beat it for target shooting, I put it on my long range hunting gun this fall zerroed at 300 yards 3.30" high at 100 yards, and useing the lower dot which is 4min higher than top dot at 22x I was dead on at 500 yards, reticale is alluminated for twighlight shooting. Not much more expensive than a good Leupold

Without knowing what your butget is and I'm guessing that your not wanting THE best scope money can buy, as an owner of a Falcon scope there are the best bang for your buck when it comes to target scopes (imho). My experiance with TACTICAL scopes is limited but have played with a few mentioned in this thread (all great scopes I'll add) but cost almost as much as your rifle your wanting to get. Mine is a Falcon Hunter 4-14 with windage and elevation turrets at 1/8" Adjustment 100 yards for all for around the $400 mark from CyberK on the very site. You can read some reviews of some of there other scope hear:
