Wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem: I made up about 70 223 loads using LC and FC brass and cci small rifle primers and, when moving the finished cartridges from the loading block to the cases I noticed two of the primers had simply fallen out ( one LC and one FC ). No obvious reason, all appeared to have been properly seated etc. and the brass was all 'once fired' stuff not old tired brass that was on its last legs.

Interested to know if others have seen similar and advice etc welcome.

Never seen this before with any other caliber.

Cheers.

One of the safey operations of reloading is to ensure the primers are seated with proper tension. If a primer goes in too easy, that case should be discarded.
A primer blowing out on firing is not a fun thing to have happen.

I would not use the FC brass anymore. They have very loose primer pockets and puke out primers. When you handprime you can total tell the difference between FC brass and Winbrass or Rembrass. The FC brass provides very little resistence or tension to hold the primer.

FC /LC If its military brass, needs to be swaged, before seating primers.

Did you swage these primer pockets? Any chance your swage is slightly oversize?

Also, as H3841 suggests, you need to work on "feeling" the primer seat with the proper tension.

You only need to swag primer pockets that had crimped primers ie military ammo.

Otherwise, you seat a primer like everything else. Once fired does not always mean ok brass. IF overpressure or very large chambers, it might be damaged in one firing.

If you hand seat you will quickly get a feel for loose pockets. best to just toss the loose ones.

"...What is this swaging..." Milsurp brass has a crimp on the primer. Keeps the primer in place when the ammo is used in MG's. That needs to be removed to get the new primer in. Swaging reams the crimp out. Just chamfering the primer crimp out will do. Slower to do though.

FC/LC brass is good if you swage it properly.Don't throw them away give them to some who has a swager.

Swaging makes primer pockets larger by cleaning up the crimp on military cases. Swaging does not make loose pockets smaller.

If the primer pockets are too big, the case is garbage. Throw them away.
