Hello,

I am just wondering if anyone can provide a decent starting point for longer range .223 loads out of my AR. Its a 1:9 twist and am just thinking ahead when I get around to doing service rifle. I don't have any preferences on bullet weight or powder choice, just whatever is available..... :p

Thanks,

A lot of guys use the magnum powdwers with ball powder. My personal favorite is the 69gr SMK or 70gr Berger over Varget and a CCI BR4 primer, Win or Nosler brass, works great in my CZ Kevlar and 7615 Tac. Getting some RL10x to try out the lighter bullets and for my 204.

Varget? Does that powder still exist?

Just got some from Higginson a couple months back. VERY expensive.

For sporting in an AR, I am trying 55grain Hornady with 25gr of Varget on a CCI rifle primer. Seems to have a kick similar to UMC factory 55 gr. Don't know the velocity yet.

Assuming you want to feed from your magazine, then bullets like a Hornady 68 or Sierra 69 HPBT might be a good place to start. Or even better, Hornady 75 HPBT (not AMax) or Sierra 77 HPBT.

If you are willing to single-load your ammo, there are even higher performance long range bullets, but you won't be able to seat them short enough to feed from a magazine. This would be worthwhile for shooting beyond 600 yards. Bullets such as the Sierra 80 HPBT, Hornady 75 AMax, JLK 75 VLD, etc.

My Remington R-15 VTR 22" likes Ramshot TAC 24.7gr under Nosler Ballistic Tip 55gr with Winchester brass and WSR primer. I could get 1/4 MOA at 100 yards from this load. You need to observe the pressure sign as previous advices.:)

My best to date
69 grain SMK with 25.3g varget over 7 1/2 rem br primers
consistently 1-1 1/2 groups out of my AR at 100yrds.

My 55g load with 26.1g H335 averages about 2-2 1/2 inch groups at 100 this is with my 20 inch HB 1/9 twist my 69 g Varget load is far the best ive ever shot with my AR

Now when i put the 16 inch upper on add 2-3 inches per grouping either load.

The 20/s the SH-T

25.4gr H4895 with bulk Hornady 55gr FMJ's. Work great out of the 1:9 AR and Stevens bolt action as well.

Can't quote group sizes with the AR since I hardly ever shoot it with a scope. Much better groups than with factory commercial loads with the irons or the scoped bolt action. Also shoots much better than any Varget load I ever tried.
