I just bought a Stevens 200 in .223 for hunting coyote's this winter. Typically I handload for all my other guns, but I'm wondering if it's worthwhile for this calibre. I know you could buy Winchester 45 gr HP in 40 round box's at Wal-Mart for around $20 at one time. I'm not sure if that ammo is still around. If so, would reloading even be worth it? If I do, which bullet and load could you recommend for shooting coyote's out here in Alberta? Thanks.

I just started last week at reloading my own .223 ammo and I have to say it is worth it big time.

for Varmint it may not be but I am doing Target shooting and aiming for Accuracy so loading my own has helped a lot.

I figure at 25$ for 100 good quality bullets, 2.70$ for Primers, already have the brass and 25$ for a bottle of powder it is worth it.

if you have the time that is but I find it relaxing and satisfying to load my own, I take my time and make sure everything is at my standards.

I was loading 50 grain v-max, and 50 grain sierra blitz-king. Both bullets were devastating on coyotes, oh, and its definitely worth while to re-load, if you are doing any decent amount of varmint shooting!

i reload b/c it's almost impossible to get anything other than 55 grain fmj - and mine likes 62-70 grain pills- 1/7 twist

I have the same gun. If you like to do lots of shooting, reloading is the way to go. I use 55 gr. Hornady SPSX & 50 gr Barnes Varmint Grenades.
These are loaded up with 13.5 gr of Blue Dot Powder. There is lots of info on the net about Blue Dot. It is very cheap to load with and does not heat up the barrel after lots of shooting. 500 loads per pound of powder works for me.
Kind Regards, Henry

Wow, thanks for the quick responses, sounds like I'll be reloading. Anyone know if the Winchester 40 packs are still being sold? maybe I could use it to get sighted in and keep the brass for reloading. Also, any more pet loads? I'll definitley try the ones suggested, the V-Max and Varmint Grenades had me curious already anyway.

My Stevens 200 likes 19.6 grains of IMR 4198 behind a 55 gr Hornady Vmax, or 26 grains of W748 behind a 52 grain Speer hollowpoint.

Actually, if you are loading a 223 shell with a maximum load of 13.5 gr of Blue Dot. It is impossible to double charge the case. If you are making light loads with Blue Dot then yes it is possible to double charge.
Always make sure you know what you are loading.
Start with a lesser charge and work your way up watching for pressure signs.

.223 ammo these days is bloody expencive, for the "value" packs your looking at about 62 cents a round (remington umc 250 round packs 45 grain soft nose) up to 23 bucks per 20 for standard green box remington. so reloading right now is deffanetly a plus.

I reload for .223 in 2 different rifles, one is a stevens 200 . Mine has worked well with most bullets -does seem to like 60 grain v-max and 68 grain BTHP Hornady and seated long . I use h335 or varget for powder

I believe so, at Wally mart, and they can be surprisngly acurate, they have shot under an inch in pretty much every gun i've tried them into.

Brass is ok to reload too...
