Hey guys, getting ready for hunting season this year and I think I’ll be taking my Swiss arms classic green for use within 100 yards where the round is most effective on medium game. Just wondering what loads people have used in the past? I would like to shoot a few and try and get some groupings but unfortunately there are not very many hunting loads available in my local stores so I’ll most likely have to order online. I have sourced 2 boxes of Remington hypersonic bonded 62gr PSP which should in theory work well with the 1/10 rifle twist but any experience or recommendations would be appreciated!

Premium Vital-Shok 60 Grain Nosler Partition
Federal Fusion 62 gr
Winchester 64 gr Power Point

or a bigger Caliber

I used a nosler partition out of my 22-250. It made fast work of a mature whitetail doe but the bullet fractured into 2 pieces. The base piece went straight and lodged into the shoulder but the top portion redirected and punctured the stomach. Absolutely devastating damage internally but little to no blood trail. I plan to try the Barnes TSX

You're over-gunned... try an old Cooey single shot .22 with CB caps... center the crosshairs on the middle eyelash, drop down 7/16" and squeeeeeze...

Maybe its just in SK, but we can't use anything smaller than .243 diameter for big game hunting. I don't think I would use my .223 for deer hunting, but that's not to say that it couldn't or shouldn't be done. I just don't think I'd feel comfortable.

In Manitoba we are allowed to use any centerfire but smaller than .223 I believe is not recommended in the hunting guide, I may have the caliber wrong on that one I’ll have to check when I get off work. I have no misconceptions of what this round is capable of against medium size deer, hence keeping my shooting range to 100 yards and using a specifically designed hunting round. I would use my .30 caliber rifle but my brother and his new girlfriend are both new to hunting and want to use a more traditional rifle so I am left using my SAN.

Alberta has the same type of law. .23 or higher for big game here.

I have taken 3 now with 50 grain spire points.

Two dropped without moving, one took 4 slow steps before she cratered in.

All broadside into the ribs. The damage to the internal organs, heart, liver, and lungs esp., was impressive. Left all that for the crows, as it wasn't worth salvaging.

The one bullet that I recovered, got me 35 or so grains of bullet parts from an area a few inches square, up against the inside of the far side leg of the doe (mulie, dry doe, decent size).

That has been my experience.

Cheers

Go to the store, look for a box of shells with a picture of a deer on them.

In my original post I clearly stated that I do not have the option of testing different loads or even access to them locally. Almost everything local to me are varmint loads.

Thanks for the info! I've heard that lighter loads can he haphazard due to fragmenting or hitting solid bone but it's good to see someone having a positive experience. There are 50gr Sako gameheads I can grab here in town. Are those worth checking out?

You will have zero issue killing deer with the Remington 62 gr corelokt loads you have already sourced.

As previously stated, the Federal Fusion 62 and Winchester 64gr Powerpoints will also be devastating.

I have not personally used or witnessed the Remington 62 psp loads on deer, but I have used/seen used the other two. All are accurate, and very hard on medium game.

Almost everything doesn't mean everything. So let me rephrase, order 100 rounds online of something with a picture of a deer on the box.
