223 SABOTS in M14S

sabots have proven to be a BAD thing in most rifles, let alone worrying about gas pressures, etc- the remington accellerators have been somewhat less than stellar in both accuracy and performance-
and i've seen warnings about using those in semi-auto rifles- may not work sort of thing- get yourself something in BOTH calibers- 223 and 308- and forget about trying to make one do the other's job

im lost.... a 223 bullet in a .308 case?
you're not lost- look up "sabot round" or, to save you the trouble, it's a 308 "bullet" that's HOLLOW with the 223 occupying the cavity- the 308 " collar " is made out of some lightweight material, and drops off after a certain amount of flight, but the 223 continues on at greater velocity- it works well in taks and artillery, but not so good in rifles

They have been around for a long time, theory was when you where out hunting deer and saw coyote or similar you could blast at em with a 22 cal varmint bullet out of your ought 6 or 308 rifle. Accuracy cannot be used in the same sentence as accelerator.............
Guys used to use them in 30-30's for treed cougars as to not tear up the pelts here in AB.I have a few hundred/.224 Sabots I got from e-bay years back but never got around to playing with them along with a wide variety of data...............Harold
Firing sabot ammunition out of a rifle with a flash suppressor or muzzle brake can be trouble. (Sabot starts to release as soon as it is not fully supported in a barrel).
Different pressure curve for sabot ammunition (compared to "normal" projectile weight) may give function issues in a gas-operated rifle too.
User reports on sabot rifle ammunition is that it is less accurate than conventional ammunition. My experience is that it also shoots to a different zero, which on consideration isn't all that surprising.

I have a couple boxes of all 3 cals. All 3 shoot MOD groups (minute of door) but good enough. I heard that they stopped making them because of lack of balistic "finger print" There is no rifleing left on the bullet. I seriously doubt this but figured I'd pass it along.
The Accelerators grew out of the USArmy SLAP Saboted Light Armor Penetrator program.
I believe they still use 50BMG SLAP, but gave up on the x51mm SLAP rounds.
I bought some aftermarket sabots many years ago, and did a small amount of loading and testing with a 303 .
I got over 4000 fps out of it, but could keep it on the paper at 100 M

It's foolishness until it works. Sabots seem to work well in tank guns (and anti-tank) but it seems nobody has yet been able to make them work well (i.e. consistently) in centrefire rifle cartridges. At that level, there doesn't seem to be enough potential compared to just selling us more guns in different calibres.
Not likely, there's not much "finger print" left on varmint type bullet except lead dust and copper flakes.
Exactly, there was no accuracy thats what killed them.
5000 fps. wow, like to see inside of a barrel after a box of those, can't see plastic surviving to well under those kind of conditions.

Sabots work like a hot damn in muzzle loaders and rifled barrel shotguns...but the velocities are WAYYYY slower.
If I had some sabots for rifle I'd try them just to take a photo of the chronograph readings.
I've heard of the odd nut job whipping 75gr FMJ out of 300 RUM at velocities exceeding 5400 fps...(I think I even saw one load for this on reloaders nest) - friggin retards.

They are old. I think they stopped making them 10 years ago...but that is just speculation on my part. It may have been longer ago...when you get old the distance of time distorts!!!
