any input as to what loads i can use in my savage mod 12, 1-9 twist, 26" bbl, shooting @ 300 yds, have varget powder & would like a bullet & load reccomendation. Thanx in advance for your input.

25.3 varget on a 69 SMK is the sierra accuracy load. Seams to work fine out of my R15 out to 500m.

Now if I could only shoot it from prone unsupported like it shoots off of a bag. :/

If you are staying within 300m, I would try to find some less expensive 55 gr tips though. They will probably shoot flatter, and save you some $.

60 gr. Hornaday V-Max. with 27.5 gr. H380. This was given to me from a guy on another form. He said it shoots very well in his Savage Model 12FVSS, 1-9 twist barrel. I have the same rifle and it shoots very well in mine too. I've gotten groups under 1/2", when I do my part.....Ken

I also have a model 12. My best load so far is a 52gr hp speer with 26grs of varget. It will easily shoot under 1/2" at 100m. I am using a bushnell elite 3200 fixed 10 tactical, even at 300m (which I have not shot very much) I have shot just under 2". Makes me wonder what these guns are capable of at 300 if more magnification was available for more percise shot placement, as the cross hairs pretty well cover the center of my target.
What's the rest of your set up?

MP5k your 1/9 twist savage will shoot the small bullets 52gr with many powders at 100 Varget Benchmark,h332 etc but you will be at a disatvantage shooting 300 yards. Two fellows at range where using the small bullets in Model 12 Savages and Rem police. they just don't shoot as well if any conditions as the 69gr 75gr do. they did fine with O wind but would loose all the time to fellows with 75gr bullets if there was even light winds.and the small bullets just bdon't cut it a long distances 500 and up BC is to Low

no scope yet, the gun is in the mail to me as we speak ( write ), Im looking to top it with a 9-24 power variable, still deciding the brand. Looks like i got some great info here to help me get started. Thanx a lot for all the great input. I have already purchased the varget powder & i think ill step up tp the 69 gr bullet now, I just wasnt sure of how heavy i could go.

The 69g SMK and Varget work great in mine as well out to 500 yards. I have also tried 55g V-max and Varget for gophers that works great as well, at 100 yards the 55 V-max seems to group every bit as good as the 69 SMK but have not went any further with the V-max. I have some 52g A-max I am going to play with soon as well. Has anyone tried the 40g V-max in the 1:9 twist?

69 Smk???

Who makes the 69 SMK? what does SMK stand for? i just bought a Rem 700 Police so i am sorta in the same boat!

another bullet you might try is the 63g Sierra varmint king,if you are thinking varmints.Out of my model 12,they work very well.At about 2900fps.I've shortened my barrel down to 21" because it was too muzzle heavy for my liking.I'm using Sierra data for the AR-15.Seems to work just fine.Still have some fine tuning to do though.H335 and IMR 4320 are my powder choices for the Savage.

Ended up with SMK 69s & varget powder, federal cases & cci primers, shoots 1 hole groups @ 100 m, Breaks clays @ 300 m every time. I love that savage, cheap to shoot, no recoil & accurate.
