Hello this is my very first post here on the forums. I'm very new to shooting (end of last year). I'm looking at purchasing a Remington 700 vtr chambered in .223 rem, looking to shoot 150-400 yards. I know the sky is the limit when it comes to optics. What would be a good choice? Maybe a few options in different price ranges?

Thanks

Under 1k - some of the bushnells are decent , vortex- viper line up
$1k - look at the sightrons
2k- night force , votex razor HD
3+ you're into schmidt and bender,
4k- other models of Schmidt and bender , nightforce BEAST

What features do you want ?

A 36X benchrest scope for a beginner?

X2 - and for 150-400 yards?

The higher the magnification, the lesser the Field of View. I use a fixed 10X for up to 600 yds. At 36X and at 100 yds, it will take you 15 seconds to find the target.........

I recommend that you don't spend much on a scope, perhaps as much as you spent on the rifle - max. At least until you've figured out where you're going with your shooting.

$600 kind of limits you on your choices but if that is your budget then look for a good used Vortex Viper HS 6-24 X50 or Sighton II Big Sky 6.5-20 X50 . One thing I would do if I was you is to rethink your VTR choice and go with a model with a round barrel and stay cleear of the triangular barrel.

I am no expert but if you plan on seeing .223 holes at 400 yards you had better go for some real magnification otherwise you will be buying a spotting scope in order to see such small holes.

If you wait for something really decent to go on sale than you may get exactly what you want.

If you plan on adjusting from 150-400 yards than you may want to stay away from Bushnell. I own a Bushnell Elite and as much as I like it I find it a real pain in the arse to set. Adjusting my Elite by 1/4 MOA is more of a rough estimate and it rarely adjusts the same way twice or in the same direction for that matter. I also find that it usually takes 3-5 shots for the adjustment to settle. Once set the scope is great but I would not continually adjust them.
