Currently shooting a Stiller Tac30 w 308 and 260 barrels. I'm looking to add a 223 barrel option to train on positions, bolt manipulation, etc... out to no more than 300m.

I would pick up a PTG or similar bolt to go with the action, and looking to use a 700 take-off barrel in 223 to complete the conversion.

My question is, how much are PTG bolts in Canada, and would any work need to be done to the take off barrel (beyond confirming headspace) to get this thing to shoot. Not looking to shoot bug hole groups, just looking to punch steel with factory ammo and practice the "shooter" side of the game.

Thanks in advance.

I believe you can order the PTG bolt directly from them. They do ship up to Canada, just make sure they have one in stock, I had a ####ty experience ordering from them before. Could you not get a Stiller bolt? You will have to get the PTG bolt fitted though.

I'm not sure as to whether or not you have to do anything to the barrel to get it to headspace correctly. You could luck out and have one fit just right, if not, you'll have to get some work done to the barrel. I'm guessing it would be a similar operation to getting the chamber set back. You've got me interested as I have a Rem 700 with 2 bolts fitted to it, hadn't thought of going the takeoff barrel route for the .223 trainer barrel though.

Have you looked into just getting a barrelled action from the ee? Pretty quick to swap scope and chassis between actions and then you don't have to pay a smith.

I would guess that the stiller is going to be a bit different than a 700, recoil lug thickness is a factor, so I would assume some work is needed. There are some budget friendly blanks available now so it may work out cheaper to have a new barrel chambered to your rifle than messing with a factory barrel.

You won't regret a 223 trainer. I am currently loving my switch barrel 700 setup. I am going to try working up a reduced load with trailboss to get short range wind training in with my centrefire rifle.

I've been pondering the exact same thing for a while. Lots of money gets tied up in an action / scope / chassis, why not just swap barrels?

How hard would it be to buy say a CDX-7 action (or something similar), get a .308 and a .223 bolt made and have two barrels cut? Is it a big job to switch barrels? Can you have barrels made to use a barrel but like on a Savage?

For what is costs for parts and fitting, I am sure you can find a Rem 700 in 223 and go from there. I assume you aren't looking for match accuracy.

I have a Savage in 223 using a factory barrel for a trainer... Rem 783's in 6.5 CM, 6XC and someday maybe, 308. The bolt throws are the same length which was a nice bonus.

Why not consider a remage conversion so you get your nice remmy action with a savage barrelnut for great headspacing and diy barel changes.

Best of both worlds.

i was more wondering if you could do this with any action. If so, I'd like to get something nice like the new Cadex action, drop it into a high end stock like a Cadex / MPA / Manners and have say 3 barrels on hand to spin on depending what I feel like shooting. Ex: .223 for practice / coyotes, .308 for practice / deer, 6.5 for more serious shooting.

So like I said, I'd have a good action, a good stick, a good optic that wouldn't come off, a barrel wrench and 3 barrels.

Totally do-able. Don't need a barrel with a barrel nut either. You can have all 3 barrels spun up for your particular action and just swap them on and off with an action wrench and a barrel vice. No need to adjust headspace each time either as they'll just headspace off the shoulder of the barrel.

Completely doable but the OP was looking for low cost build.... That would be an off the shelf set up.

But if more options and flexibility are desired, lots of other choices possible

Goals.... Budget... THEN parts
