My bud is looking for a carry around type Varmint toy like my Tikka T-3.
Cost is a factor, so I suggested he look at a Savage Hunter in 223.
Any idea what the twist rates of the Sav & a few other options are?

Tikka is 1-8
Sav ?
Rem 700sps ?

I suggested he check Thompson Venture bolt gun, any comments?

What weight of bullets does he want to shoot? If I know that I can recommend a twist.

The twist rates are available on all the manufacturers websites.

I have a savage axis. Cost was very little but the gun is great. It came with a decent scope as well. The twist on my axis is 1-9. Good fun to use on gophers as well. I doubt I'd trade it for a gun costing 2x+ as much.

Savages can be had in the 1:9 twist. Not sure about the Remchester but I think only 1:12.
Tell your buddy to save up a little longer and go for the T3.

If i have the choice, i think ( 1 in 9 ) is the most versatile twist, my MR-1 have a 1 in 9 and it group superbly from 45 to 75 gr, 55 gr being the worst grouping, i am expecting a Tavor soon with 1 in 7 never had a rifle with such a rapid twist, will see... JP.

Don't base your opinion of twist rate on a Tavor IMO. I have read and heard from owners that they are not very accurate. And the trigger pull is long, creepy, gritty and heavy. No good for accuracy shooting.

As for the 1-9 being the most versatile - probably so. I believe it should be good for light bullets and fine for weights up to 68 and maybe 75 (depending on actual twist rate (8.75 vs 9.25 is a big difference with 75 gn I understand)

If the friend of the OP is leaning toward heavy bullets, go 1:7, otherwise 1:9 should do for varmint/coyote.

When i was out of the country i had a chance to shoot a Tavor at 100 metres (100 rounds ) and it was very accurate and i did not felt to bad of a trigger, long you are right but after 10 rounds it was very predictable and not that bad we were shooting MFS ammo 55 gr FMJ and on the bag it was an easy 3 to 4 inch, the rifle have big potential that why i order one... Cheers. JP.

Cool, enjoy.:)

I had to make the same choice and when I did my reading most folks were concerned with "over-stabilizing" bullets with the 1-7 twist. I ended up getting the 1-7 twist and it shoots 55gr ammo just fine. If your friend wants to put holes in little critters he should have no troubles using 55gr Amax with the faster twist. I did and the group sizes were similar to 75gr BTHPs.

Thanks, my bud has decided to pick up a Tikka after seeing mine shoot.
Mine is 1-8 twist & shoots 53 match & 55sp Sierra's into tiny little 3 shot groups in the 1/8 to 3/8 range  In fact my T3 lite shoots better than my neighbours older Tikka 223 Varmint!!
The mag is too short to load long heavy bullets but I can't get them to shoot anywhere near as well anyway, so I think I'm just not gonna worry about it.

Yeah, my 1:8 T3 Varmint will put 5 of the 50 gr Vmax 3300fps into .220" @100yd The best I've got out of the 80gr Amax was .249" @100 but a 1/4 min load nonetheless, and a joy to shoot out to a grand.

My only though about too fast a twist is with 40 and 50 gn bullets. I have read that they may come apart with a fast twist. If the use does not want to use light weight bullets then no worries.

I went with 1:7 cause I want to shoot heavies.

My choice for a .224 was 1:7 as well. I've had stability problems shooting long bullets in slow twist barrels but I've never had a stability problem with standard jacketed short bullets in a fast twist barrel. Stay away from the pills designed to give explosive performance at .22 Hornet or .222 velocities, and the fast twist is the better choice.
