Been reading "Blue Tiger" by Caldwell lately, for tiger hunting he switched from the 303 Savage to the 22 Savage Hi-Power and never looked back.

So for modern day deer hunting a reasonable comparison could be made to the 223 and 30WCF.

The CZ 527 Youth with a 3rd magazine sure looks like a nice rig. And significantly lighter than my Marlin Texan.

Cue the righteous indignation and 40gr varmint bullet wounding arguments in 3.....2.....1....

I will start it off...

Unless you are talking about a tight twist barrel with a mono or bonded (55 TSX or 60 Part etc...), on LITTLE coastal deer, I say no to the .223 and limit yourself on the 30-30... sure a 223 can kill a big buck and a 30-30 can get it done at 250 yards, but the margins are just too tight and there really is no need for it... why intentionally and with forethought INCREASE the risk of a wounding loss??? Just my 2 coppers.

Not after Deer so much, preferred quarry is Moose. Range isn't necessarily an issue because I can get these to approach quite close with calls. Or stalk close.
Hypothetically I could take my Mini-14. That would be a stunt just to see if it can be done. Doubtful. Except if it doesn't work that great the consequences aren't exactly pleasant for my quarry or myself.

Callousness. Tough tracking job. So no leave the Mini-14 at home.

Using bullets classified for deer hunting, I would pick the .223. Shoots flatter so good to go to most normal deer hunting ranges (say about 300 yards) and as the .223 is generally pretty accurate, inexpensive and low recoiling, you can practice lots to make it easy to ensure good shot placement.

I actually don't have much use for the 30-30, even though it was a ground breaking cartridge in it's day. In a compact Lever I would rather have a hot loaded 45 Colt. And in a bolt, semi or single shot, there are plenty of other options I would prefer.

Not allowed in Ab, but if it was you would not be in our camp. Lots of money and time spent on a hunt. Why would you use the least energy you can. A hornet, 17 hmr, 22lr, all will kill if everything is perfect but not ideal. Quick kill is your responsibility!! Again this is jmho.

If you prefer all of those options over the .30-30, why not choose an equally wide array of options over the .223... or are you making some kind of point?

You seem to be combining 2 separate statements.

In the first, I was answering the question posed by the OP about which of the 2 cartridges I would pick.

In the second, I was discussing only the 30-30 and how I don't use it anymore. Perhaps I should have left the second statement out of the post, so as to not confuse some people, but hopefully it's clear now.

None of the deer I've taken with the Hornet or 22-250 have complained.

The CZ 527 is an appealing rifle with the 3 round mag. The 223 is attractive due to the price of components and recoil level.

Go with a 6.5x55 swede and you'll have all the margin you need, light recoil, flat shooting and superbly accurate, high SD bullets make for a very efficient kill ..Tradeex has a good selection for around $250 ,best value for the money and you're good for everything from coyotes, deer to moose

223 is not legal here for big game
Only varmint
30-30 can kill a moose my grand dad did this half of is life
I own and use 30wcf i hunt Black bear and deer but all my shot is under 100Y
i bowhunt so my stand are close to animal
My friend use a 223 for yote and is hammer on them but not sure on buck in rut or a big doe

Not confused at all... you answered the question by talking about shooting deer with a .223 @ 300 yards... then state that you are not a fan of the .30-30 and would choose other options, with no statement about options for the .223... my question is, if you are going to push the limits of the .223 (300 yards), why not choose an option more suited to CPX2 game at 300 yards.

I see you are still confused, but I suppose the internet can get confusing, so I will try to explain better. This is what the OP said:

So I think the discussion is about .223's and 30-30's. Not "what's best suited for CPX2 game at 300 yards" (why do people say CPX2 instead of "deer" anyway? ) Laugh2

If you need some help in determining the best cartridge selection for your type of deer hunting, you could start a thread and I'm sure you would get lots of answers. Hope this helps.

There seems to be alot of confusion going around.

Well maybe start that thread to get answers, so this discussion can focus on 30-30 vs 223.

I appreciate the tip... and the tremendous example you set... you are a true asset to CGN, I hope all of the "trolls" observe and learn.
