I went to Cabelas today to look at a new varmint rifle and I think I have decided on a nice little .223. I asked about using 5.56 through it if I could buy some in bulk and they said that they didnt recommend putting anything but .223 through a .223 as there are subtle differences between .223 and 5.56.

Question:
Are they right and if they are can someone fill me in on whats up. I was always under the assumption that they were essentially the same calibre.

thanks

Not again Please search before you post. anyways its not safe to shoot 5.56 in .223 chambers but its ok to shoot .223 in 5.56 chambers. go search GOOGLE lots out there

i use 5.56 in my weatherby vanguard and get under 2 inch groups at 220 yards. they seem to shoot good. i have shot over 400 rounds of 5.56 in my 223 rifle and its still as accurate as the first time i shot it.

It was safe to mix and match before the Internet age..............

If you shoot 5.56 in a .223 chambered rifle your #### will not fall off and your rifle will not blow up in your face.

Same goes for 7.62 in a .308.

You would think if it was a real problem, there would be tons of pictures all over the WWW with graphic pictures of blown up rifles and disfigured shooters that have attemped such a daring feat and failed.
