So I picked up a CSA VZ58 in .223 and immediately swapped the plastic for a surplus wood stock set. The rifle looks great but the recoil is terrible to the cheek. I put a thin, soft cheek pad there but if anything now it's worse. The recoil feels like it's all from the action and not the actual round being fired. Kinda like the gas port is too large or something.

Anyone else have this issue? Any solutions that don't include putting an ugly M4 stock back on a com-bloc rifle?

I was thinking of a recoil buffer like that of an AK or SKS, but there is none on the market. Might make one myself.

Zahal has options for stocks, some with recoil dampening and then add a compensator. I have found that every muzzle device except the AKM type makes a world of difference.

Yeah these guns are like that. Both 223 and 762. I find the magpul m4 stocks best for managing recoil since yours had the buffer tube. Alternatively I find the fixed plastic stock is actually good too.

Figures I have the AKM type muzzle break lol.

My brass doesn't go very far but it's always dented up. My CZ-858 in 7.62 doesn't hit me like this and it's the same configuration.

Can't go the buffer tube route. If I can't have a wood stock on this rifle I don't even want it.

My 858 was the same for me, it’s a stock design problem. You might find adding a slip on recoil pad might bring your face back enough. It’s a cheap fix too.
