223 with a 1:12 twist?

I have a M700 retrofitted with a M600 .222 barrel rechambered to .223. Not sure of the twist, might be 1-14, maybe 1-12.
It will not shoot 55gr boat tail bullets without keyholes. It is fine with 55gr flat based ones, and all lighter ones. Very accurate.

scope is a simmons aetec, 2.8-10x44wa, I have taken it off and going to try a bushnell elite 3200 3-9x40 which I know it works

if the rifle doesn't shoot well in cold weather it's no good to me, it's my coyote rifle

A quick web search revealed that Bushnell elite parallax is set at 100 yards. I had the same issue as you when I had my 1-12 twist - put on a better scope Bushnell 4500 4-15 with Parallax adjustment and it shot 1.5 inch groups at 200 yards. Your rifle is still good keep your shots under 200 yards. Btw shooting in cold weather is challenging

Something isn't right.
I say the barrel's crown is damaged....
B/c I have 1-14"twist K Hornet and it shoots 50 gr old style Barnes X bullets (way longer than cup and core 55gr bullet) up to 300m just fine.
Also the Win 60gr PP without problem.
Lets see;

1-14"twist -50gr bullet out of K Hornet at 2600fps (optimistic) spins at 133 714 RPM is fine
1-12"twist -55gr bullet out of 223 Rem at 3200fps (realistic) spins at 192 000 RPM and is tumbling?

It's been proven that the crown doesn't affect accuracy as much as people have been led to believe

I don't why people are talking about parallax, it doesn't matter in my dad's 308, 1 inch groups at 100 yds, 2 inch at 200 and 3 to 4 inches at 300

never thought about it when shooting dad's 308 so why is it an issue when shooting my 223?

What kind of glass are you sighting with? A scope of less than 10X probably doesn't have paralex adjustments, but a .22 centerfire is often scoped with an optic having greater magnification, and this is when paralex becomes a real bogeyman, even at shorter ranges.

I had a simmons aetec 2.8-10 x44wa but have changed it to a bushnell elite 3-9x40, I don't need anything bigger that for coyotes

I doubt paralex is your issue. What exactly were the loads you tried? The wind probably didn't help you. I'd probably try the new proven scope and some 40-50 grain bullets before I wrote the rifle off. Were any of the bullets giving signs of tumbling at 200?

and there it is, hornady superformance 53gr v-max shoots 1 inch at 200yds, same at 100, made the pepsi can dance a little at 300 yds, done, amercian eagle 50gr hp shot very well also, thanks for all the input and I can't wait for the 280 barrel

Yeah, ammo differentials are so damn important and so much more of a variable than the average person knows.

Great that you nailed it now!
