Hi, I've got one of these to play with for a few weeks but none of my books have the round listed. I've cobbled together info from the great internet but that's not the best game.
Using Hornady sp's, 60g and Vmax 60g, started with H4350, 41-43.8g
That gives me 3311-3557fps, bolt handle feels heavy to lift at 43.5g
My info tells me I shoud be getting 3650
Seeing as it's -18 here, I tried some Mag pirmers but that gave me heavy bolt lift right away at 41g and 3440fps, so I backed off.
Is there any reference to using OR NOT using Mag primers with these WSSM's?
Any info would be many thanks

Nothing says "Merry Christmas!!" like a new, high powered rifle.

Well according to Hodgdon's Annual Manual the max load for a 60 gr nosler partition ( I know your not using this bullet but it is the only one that is listed @ 6ogr) with H4350 is 43.8 grains seems you startd with a max load. The minimum load according to the same manual is 41.0 grains. The primer used is a Winchester Large rifle. Happy Holidays.

P.s. I don't believe there are any mistakes above but if there are and you blow yourself up DO NOT BLAME ME!! Use common sense.

Hodgdon's site has data for 58 to 100 grain bullets(no 60, but 58 or 70 grain data will do). The WSSM is typed in full(Winchester Super Short Magnum) on the list.

Ah, no, I started with the min load, 41, max was 43.8. Actually I started with 40, just to be safe. I was just looking for some other info as there seems to be little out there. My original data came from the Hodgen site....I am just looking to cross reference with some other sources, thanks

Straight from the horses mouth

Hornady 7th ed reloading manual tells me

223 Winchester Super Short Magnum
Primer: Winchester WLR (just a large rifle primer, does not say to use magnum primer)

"Our data for the 223 WSSM is ahead of the curve, as winchester has not introduced thiscartridge to SAMMI at the writing of this text. But, we believe that the dimensions and data listed here will be close to Winchester's final draft ... It is important that you start low and approach max loads with caution. We found that signs of excessive pressure came on with very little warning."

60 Grain V-Max and SP both have the same load data:

powder.......start load (3400fps) .......max load (3700 or 3800fps)

aa 2495......32 gr.............................36.5 gr (3700)
h 4895........32.9 gr..........................37.3 gr (3700)
imr 4064......33.8 gr..........................38.9 gr (3800)
viht n-150....33.2 gr..........................39.9 gr (3800)
rl - 15 .........34.4 gr .........................40.2 gr (3800)
varget.........34.8 gr...........................39.3 gr (3700)
big game......36.9 gr ..........................42.5 gr (3700)
win wxr........41.9 gr ..........................47.9 gr (3800)

As with any load data you find on the internet, please take this AS INFORMATION ONLY as you should seek out published load data from its source. I take no responsibility if you take this data and blow yourself up, nor do I take any responsibility for typo's!!!

Gotta cover your butt these days!

"...started with 40, just to be safe..." Follow the manual religiously. The minimum loads are safe. Going below there may not be. Not likely an issue with just one grain though.

Gott love it....

Hey Slushie could you check that data again for IMR 4064, 33.8-38.9 sounds low. I just checked Hogden again and it does say IMR 4064 38.9-41.4 for a 60g Partition. thanks

I'm not at home, i'll check it again tommorrow. I didn't say this in this post, but Sierra seems ultra low end on the scale. When I compare sierra's loads to lee or hornady, 90% of the time I see them much lower in grains. I cannot explain why, just what I see.

I also am pretty sure on the numbers as I scrolled through them twice before I clicked submit. I will though triple check for you once i'm home.

regards..
