What's the cheapest non fmj ammo to buy? Just want to put big holes in small gophers.

Those 40gr Winchesters (White box) from WalMart. About $16-$18 for a box of 40. There is probably cheaper, but that is my only point of reference.

I did every Walmart in the area, backordered for a few months.

"...want to put big holes in..." If you're not reloading yet, you'll have to try a box of as many brands and bullet weights as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. The cost of said ammo means nothing, but just buying the cheapest you can find isn't a good idea either. The 'White Box' ammo may not shoot worth beans out of your rifle. A lot of Walmart stores are getting out of the ammo business as well. Too much government interference. Go look in Crappy Tire. Won't necessarily be cheap, but it'll be there.
