22cal recomendation for 3-gun gun?

I'm looking to purchase a 22 semi, with detachable magazine and looking for recommendations. Got into 3 gun competition this year, and with winter coming we are moving to an inside range. The AR 15 and the 12 gauge are, of course, not suitable for indoor use so switching to .22 cal and 9 mm.

I've been looking at the Mossberg 715t or the Plinkster. These are both very economically priced so if they get knocked around a bit I'm not going to be too upset about it. Any other choices that you can suggest? Was also looking at the Ruger 10/22, but I'm not a fan of the rotary magazine. I know, they've been around for years and work well, but just personal preference.

S&W M&P 15-22? Same manual of arms as the AR15 you're likely used to, and they run pretty well from what I've seen. I don't see much sense in learning to run two separate rifle platforms, especially if you're new.

i would just get an 22 LR upper for an ar-15.

May cost more, but would cost you less in the long term. One lower for ar-15, two uppers that means you can go nuts on the trigger and such on the lower.

I ended up purchasing the Mossberg Plinkster 702. It's got good reviews for accuracy and lack of problems. And, it was cheap... $189 at China Tire. Hopefully, if all goes as planned, will be heading to the range with it this afternoon.

Interesting. Was not aware that this was an option... So much to learn about this sport. The AR-15 is a Ruger 556. Will keep this in mind for the future in case the Mossberg I bought doesn't work out.

Take a look at the ISSC MK22 or the GSG-15. They are internally identical but with different butt stocks. I’ve got the MK22 and it is more fun and more accurate than my 10/22 and a great non restricted grouse gun. Black or tan?

Edit: sorry I jumped the... gun... and didn’t read thoroughly. My kids were yelling and I was trying to ignore them. It didn’t work. Oh well back to dadding, have a good day.

did you get the 715t? if so, just throw it away now lol...

mine was a POS, it was managable with 25 round mags, but now limited to 10 the headache aint worth it.

Those look like fun! Thanks for the suggestion.

No, got the 702. Which, from what I read online, is the same rifle, just without the tactical skin.

Put about 60 rounds thru it today, and it shoots pretty good. Have to do a little fine tuning on the sights. This one has the fibre optic sights on it. It was shooting low, so I adjusted it and of course now it's shooting high.. imagine!! :) Things were getting a bit busy at the range so put it away for now. Will slip back there one morning this week when it's a bit quieter and finish setting it up. Seemed a bit of a struggle with the bolt and charging handle, but not sure if it was the rifle or the operator.

Man i hope your Mossberg runs better than my friends. Can't get 25rds in the mag, doesn't run reliably, factory sights were meh and accuracy wasn't very good. I almost bought one a few times, at under $200 they're sooo cheap, but the experiences with my buddies and similar reports from others on here have kept me at bay...

When I finally do get a 22lr semi, it'll likely be a Marlin, or an old mossberg - the old mossbergs are supposed to be very under rated in terms of price vs quality.

i think the only mossberg that was worth anything is/was M151b Full stock, tube loader from the stock (15 if i remember correctly right side of stock??).

My wife and I have S&W M&P AR15s. We bought the CMMG .22LR conversion units from CTC. They run like a hot damn, but need a pretty snappy load. Don't use bulk Remington. No issues with the magazines either. Don't stay open after the last shot, so count your rds!

This way there is no issue with learning a new trigger as everything else is the same. I recommend getting a second optical just for the .22LR to save the bother of establishing a new "0".

Be sure to clean well after 500 rds! Could plug up your gas system if you don't. And the locking recesses as well. Big deal. Gotta clean anyway.

This one has the 10rnd mag in it. I read about the issues people were having with the 25rnd mags and am VERY happy not to have one. The jury is still out on accuracy..... have to put a few more rounds thru it and finesse the sights. I do have a scope that will be perfect for it, as well as a red dot supposed to arrive next week. Might end up putting one or the other on it, haven't decided yet. Yes, it's a cheap rifle and it feels like a cheap rifle... hopefully it will shoot like a good rifle.

lol..

cheap is cheap, you get what you pay for...

I've seen properly built competition 22 AR's and they run all day long, but they were 22 LR built from the ground up and light AF. These rifles were used in speed steel by junior shooters (like elementary school kids)

I had a 702 plinkster... Save your money it would jam all the time tried all sorts of different ammo and nothing was any better in it. Just picked up a m&p15 .22 from bullseye its 100xs the gun was a bit cheap when I picked it up but the weight alone of a cheap optic on it and I am happy. I will get some more rounds through it soon for a better review but till then I'll keep you in suspense. Go tenda had them on for 399 I paid a bit more but would rather shop local at bullseye

I put another 50 thru it today.. think I've got the sites as good as they are going to get. No jams at all in the the 100 total so far. And no fancy ammo either... Blazer and Remington golden bullets from the bucket. It will do for what I want it to do. 3gun is less than 25 yards due to space constraints and this will cover that. And I won't worry about it getting beat up in the process.

If I want to shoot something better, I will get my Cooey 600 out. It loads, and shoots, a bit slow, but it's a tack driver for accuracy.

I used a 702 for my "farming" rifle. Took it with me doing tractor work, swathing, combining, etc.. Needless to say, it got banged around, seldom, if ever, got cleaned. Worked every time I used it. Gave it to a friend I work with. He likes it. Good "beater" gun, at least for me it was.

+1 for the S&W15-22
Don’t know anything about other 22’s outside of a marlin tube fed or a ruger rotary box but the 15-22 will def be your choice for 3 Gun. It’s Polymer so you can beat it senseless and it’s still as ugly as when you first bought it. Easy to break down and clean.
Come with Magpul MBUS. Only downside is it’s classification. We can’t have it all. It’s light so your gonna wanna mall ninja it with panels and do-dads to have it feel right. They even sell a metal charging handle somewhere on the inter webs.
