I am considering buying a gun in the 22 hornet. my question is are there any advantages to this round verses more modern day rounds? also what might some disadvantages to this round be? comparing 222, 223, 220swift, 204ruger

Disadvantages are the cost of the rounds ($45 for a box of 50 when I last had one 5+ years ago) and the fact that the brass is kind of fragile if you reload.
 
Advantages:
Low recoil
mild muzzle blast
excellent accuracy
economical to reload

Disadvantages
Factory ammo is fairly expensive
Somewhat limited effective range
Really underpowered compared to the other rounds you mentioned.

I have a CZ 527 in 22 hornet and I would have to be offered an obscene wad of cash before I would part with it. It is one of my truly favorite gopher guns,and I enjoy shooting it immensely. It doesn't have the reach of a 223, but it isn't as noisy or expensive to shoot.

I agree, I sold my .223 bolt gun but will never part with my Hornet (Ruger 77/22). With urban sprawl it's getting harder and harder to find places to shoot varmints with the .223. With the Hornet being quieter it is an excellent choice, especially if you reload, and I've never had an issue with fragile cases.
 
If you reload you can have 2 in 1 by owning a 223 bolt gun and tuning 22 hornet load equivalents for your gun. Blue Dot is well proven to be a safe and accurate propellant at 22 hornet velocities :):)

just a cartridge that is getting obsolete, they were first brought out in about 1930. most people want bigger and louder now, but the hornet is a favorite and a standby among reloaders. it throws a bullet from 35-60 grains, and has a case capacity of about .80cc. for comparission, a 223 has about 1.87cc of case capacity. the hornet wont throw lead as far as a 223, but its a real workhorse for the powder it does use.

22 Hornet is not the ultimate performer in its class but as others have wisely stated, try them all. I bought a 1950 Win. M-43 Deluxe that I like so much it's the first little varmint popper I go for, now. If you pick a quality rifle to start with, the 22H will become one of your favourites.

...22 Hornet?...no!, no! no!...

....use the .22 K-Hornet!!!...for better accuracy!, longer lasting brass!...it beats the standard Hornet by a mile!!!!......
 
I took mine into a field and shot at a ground hog about 50 yards away. Another head popped head to see what the noise was. I shot it. Then another popped up. After an hour my box of 50 rounds was empty.

If I had used a 223, I would have shot about 4 times in the same hour.

This is why a Hornet is expensive to shoot...
 
If you want to shoot the .22 hornet in any volume, better move to the states. You can get a 50 round box for 16$.
 
I had a ruger 77/22 hornet, found it wasn't powerfull or accurate enough and it was too expensive to shoot so I sold it. A year later I bought a brand new ruger 77/22 hornet. It could'nt have been that bad.
 
I have a 1947 Model 70 22 hornet and it is one of the most outstanding guns I have owned.I also have a matching 1947 model 70 220 Swift the serial numbers are only 50 apart one ends in 28 and the other in 78. They will be staying with me for ever I hope.
As for the cost of ammo for the Hornet considering the accuracy I have with it and the lack of ground hogs in my area I do not use that many rounds.Still if the ammo cost $70 a box I would still shot it over my 223 22-250 or my 243.

If you can find a BRNO ZKW 465 in good condition you will be a happy man. Very nice rifle, double set triggers and detachable mag. Very Sweet. I couldn't find one so I bought my CZ 527 American. Almost the same but with a single set trigger. If you've got the wallet for it you won't be disappointed with either.Since I bought mine I've seen 2 Brno's for sale and have been kicking myself that I didn't buy either one.
