Hi,

For those who bench .22 rifles on paper, what is decent group size average at 50 yards for a 10shot group from the bench with bulk ammo say 333Winchester 36grHP or Blazer 40gr solid etc? I'd like to know the inherent accuracy in this bulk type ammo,.. so the tighter shooting your custom rig is the better the fairness to the ammo.

Thanks in advance with your rifle set up, sights etc for comparison.

Cheers, RTS.

Anyone whos honest will tell you, it depends on the gun.
Two of the same model gun could like different ammo. When switching different brands and models of .22 then it really opens up.
Some cheap guns can shoot bulk ammo well and some expensive guns won't eat any bulk ammo.
However some cheap rifles could hate bulk and only like expensive ammo.

A smart man would buy boxes of as many different brands/types of 22 and see what his gun likes.

That's fantastic, however that's one rifle using a highly-accurate Swiss-made Bleiker rifle, with a 2-stage trigger.
Try testing that with 12 rifles. 4 stock 10/22, Rem 597 and Savage 64.
I bet you rifles all will have different results.

As stated on the page.
While we strongly caution that .22LR rimfire ammo may work well in one gun and not another

The OP did not ask for results from 12 different rifles, infact he said:

"I'd like to know the inherent accuracy in this bulk type ammo,.. so the tighter shooting your custom rig is the better the fairness to the ammo."

...but if you would like to do a similar test with 12 different rifles knock yourself out.

In your average non top tier rifle (i.e. no Anschutz, 40X etc) you may end up with .5" - 2" groups at 50 yards with basic bulk ammo. Step your game up with either a better rifle, or better ammo, and your groups should shrink to around .5" - 1" Step up to running a top tier rifle with top ammo, and you may fall into the .3"-.5" range.

Group sizes mentioned above based on personal experience and a gravy boat full of whiskey.

EDIT: Blazer 40 gr is a decent bulk ammo. (.5"-1.5" groups at 50y) Winchester in .22lr is, (in my personal experience), one of the least consistent ammo around. That being said as mentioned above, each rifle is different and likes different ammo. What doesn't work for me may work very well for you. Only testing and time will tell the tale.

Thanks,
Cal.

Probably nobody who sboots bench rest .22lr is putting blazer down the pipe...

From my experience I get a 1.5" to 2" group with the bulk winchester packs. With my best lot of Eley the rifle shoots better than I do and is more like .75" for a 10 shot group. I don't shoot the bulk much- only when I have guests that are not really shooters and don't want to use the good stuff...

Trying to hold tight groups with bulk ammo is an exercise in frustration.

The problem with the bulk stuff is consistency- you can hold a small target, pull the trigger well and then the hole is somewhere else like you got caught by a big gust of wind.

This is 2 kinds of "bulk" Federal Champion 40gr SV and Federal Auto Match from my slightly modified 10/22
Fed Champion on the left and AM on the right @52 yds, 5 rnd groups except for the bottom right AM, 10 rnds and the 2 shot upper right. As you can see both are pretty accurate but the edge is definitely with the Champion. the center circle on the targets are 1/2" OD.

Tom thanks for the link and for posting the results as well.

I wanted a benchmark to compare what I get from the bench with aperture sights and various bulk ammo. I was holding many 5 and 10 round groups inside the X on a 20 yard slow fire pistol bull at 50 yds. That's a 1 inch circle. So .75" with Winchester bulk is not too bad looking at the list with that laser beam shooting rifle. I fired around 150 rounds to check. He got .513" with Winchester SuperX so if I get .75" with no scope and 333bulk pack, that's decent accuracy.

Yes I found the blaser 40gr solid to be very consistent as well. In fact without a high power scope, sometimes I did as well as Eley Tenex. THe Tenex is very consistent though, with rarely anything opening up a group like the so called flyer.

In the battle for available ammo I see more high price Eley than I do Blazer..

I liked the Blazer a lot, it was very good ammo, although I havn't seen any around for almost two years.

Remington rimfire ammo has not impressed me. The accurateshooter.com comparison test referred to above should not be taken as a ranking of ammo accuracy and it is not meant as such.

out of my 4 10/22's that are all heavily modified the average would be around as follows

win dynapoint gt - .5-.75"
cci standard - .5-.6"
american eagle 38 gr hp- .6-1.0"
cci mini mag -.75"
cci blazer - 1.00"
win 555 - 1.5"
american eagle 40 gr solid - 2.00"
rem subsonic 1-2"

now of course there is some variance from gun to gun but this would be a pretty close average out of all 4 combined. They all seem to like the win dynapoint gt though so that is what i stock up on. I use cci mini mag for hunting.

I was at the range yesterday and 50 yards. CCI standard put down a shotgun pattern. Then i switched to SK and wow...groups !
Very drastic difference. The gun is a Anschutz match 54.

Many shooters report CCI to be tight in a Match 54 chamber. Match ammo such as Lapua/SK, RWS, or Eley is the best fodder for an Anschutz.

My stock Rem 597 with Tech Sights (open iron sights) can put 10 rounds of bulk Winchester Hollow Point 36 grainers into about 3" circles.
She does about 2" with good CCI stuff.
That was a little over 50 meters from the prone shooting off of my usual range bag and open sights albeit upgraded Tech Sights. It gives you essentially an AR15 style sight image. Increases the distance between the front and rear sites by about 10" and has a precision thin front post.
I am going to be putting up an in depth review of the 597 soon. It's a very underated rifle. I sold my 10/22's and my Marlin and now she's the only one I keep. She's the only one I wanted after shooting it!
It's only single flaw is its magazines but if you're not a bullet hose that blasts 30,000 rounds of .22LR every trip out then b***es on the internet about "the .22LR shortage" then it's a negligible issue.

my results are somewhat similar to yours, except the SV does shoot very well in a couple of DPMS 22lr uppers I have. SK standard seems to group extremely well, better than what was reported in the bleiker test rifle. in other words, as has been stated by others, 22lr rifles can be quite particular, so take the time to sort out your rifle. something that hasn't been stated so far in this thread is that getting the maximum from lubed ammo sometimes takes quite a few rounds down the barrel in order to get a uniform coating of bullet lube in the barrel before proper accuracy testing can take place. shooting plated bullets removes the coating, and it does increase group size of lubed ammo.
